  • In today's USA Today newspaper, there are TWO pics of Pennington in his Marshall uniform.  Here is the article (I didn't see the pics in the online version, just in the actual newspaper):

    Marshall got gift with Pennington

James Madison coach Mickey Matthews, who just won the NCAA I-AA title, was an assistant at Marshall in the mid-1990s when, as he says, "Sometimes the players come to you.

"A young kid named Chad Pennington just showed up at our (summer) camp," Matthews says.

"He lived in Knoxville (Tenn.), but he had a grandparent who lived in West Virginia, and his father just dropped him off at our camp. I can remember Coach (Jim) Donnan and Tony Petersen, who was our quarterbacks coach, they were just raving about him. We offered Chad (a scholarship) that summer, but he did not have another offer. Maybe some small schools in Tennessee messed with him."

Pennington now quarterbacks the NFL's New York Jets.
