  • Group of Five schools to unveil all-new Top 25

As college football continues to see seismic shifts in its national landscape -- with one high-ranking official saying just last week, "The real question is for other conferences: If you're not in the Big Ten or the SEC, what are you going to do?" -- a coalition is forming among Group of Five personnel to have a dedicated poll for programs in those five leagues.

Preliminary groundwork already is underway for the American, Conference-USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and SunBelt conferences to have an official Group of Five Top 25 national poll, with voting open only to head coaches in those leagues. Independent programs UConn and UMass also will be included in the rankings, pushing the number of teams involved to be approximately 64.

  • Let's do some math, the Top 25 of 64 schools would mean the 25th ranked school would be deemed the 61% best team in the G5; wow, what a recognition.  Think about it, the #25 team would be glowing in the position of being better than 60% of the rest of the G5.  I'm thinking, just stop.  Nothing like voting to minimize your own existence, IMHO.

  • don't know if it'll come to reality or not but we've speculated for many years.

if you can't beat em, join leave em.

maybe it's not about cutting all ties (making a bold statement) but if it is it'll be difficult to give up 7+ figure paydays in order for your AD to survive.  just one point of many logistical problems

  • Doing a Top 10 makes more sense. You can promote these schools as the best of all football, plus point out the 1 loss teams being left out of the other poll for 4 loss P-4 schools. In addition, you have more influence in the say of who the G-5 playoff team is. Of course you will need to promote it, like the AAC did with the P-6 stuff.

Doing 25 is just too many and dilutes the entire thing, makes it worthless.

    Yep. Pretty much this.

Blows my mind how, in college basketball, Cinderella stories are embraced and part of the excitement and allure of the game.

Not so much in college football. Potential G5 wins over P-whatever schools can no longer be tolerated/accepted.

I know this is about the G5 possible setup but years ago when they added the extra five in the top rankings.
They should have stayed at top twenty instead of extending it to top 25. Most people believe they went to top 25 so more power schools would get those spots and increase the conferences strength of schedule.

  • Lets do a G5 playoff. I miss 1-AA because playoffs were so much better than pointless bowl games. We're never going to be P5 regardless, so this gets us a chance at some sort of national title.

  • Let's face it, we'll have the S (Super) 4 and the rest of NCAA D1 football. There is no sense in dividing D1 G5 and FCS anymore. Just roll us back into that group, spread out the conferences, we'd become a P5 in the NCAA D1 Non-Elite group.  THe playoffs would continue, and the teams that make it would be the best of the rest; not Elite S4.  THen a top 25 would be very good.  The game would still be fun, the competition would be enhance at the current FCS  without (IMHO) being at all diluted in the current G5.

You'd see, also an opinion, more folks who are on the S4 teams, not getting any or much NIL money, migrate back to this group and Saturday football fun would return to many stadiums, tailgating still tastes the same, etc.

AND, if they'd do this and keep a pack together that NO ONE plays a S4 ever, they'd have plenty of TV leverage as well, the programing is needed....

The same people ruining college football are trying to ruin basketball too.  The SEC Commissioner recently complained that the NCAA tournament is giving away "highly competitive" spots to automatic qualifiers from lower conferences at the expense of what he views as better teams from bigger leagues.  So Cinderella stories are definitely not embraced in basketball by the powers that be in the same way they aren't in football.  Football is just the priority to "fix" first in their mind since its where the biggest money is, but make no mistake they will come for basketball too.

  • I like the idea of this, but a Top 25 is too much Imo, it would be a little better to just have a Top 10. Regardless, it seems like we are seeing some of the ground work being laid for a potential split at some point.

That's uhhh not how it works.

As for the rest of the bellyaching, at what time in the history of FBS/I-A football do you guys think things were anything close to equal between the haves and the have nots? 25 years ago, we went undefeated with a win at Clemson, and our reward was a bowl game in Detroit.

This poll sounds like a fun idea. I agree that 10 or 15 would be a better idea than 25. But it's not something that's going to fundamentally alter anything. The bottom half of FBS has always been on a different level than the top half.

Didn't realize its getting that way in college basketball, too. Ugh.

  • Isn't there already a  "mid major" poll for D1 college basketball, teams like Marshall? It is kinda like admitting you don't belong with the big boys (power conferences). It is just another attempt to separate the blue blood conferences from the SBC and the MAC conferences. When will there be a low mid major poll?

Not even close. And now we can play for something that means something instead of pretending we can play for a championship. Start the G5 playoffs and bring back the excitement instead of those idiotic, made up bowl games that have become laughable and stale.

That was just a perk.  The reason we got out of CUSA is because it wasn't going to exist as we knew it within 2 years.  Whatever you think of the Sun Belt, it's a whole lot better than what's left of CUSA and makes about 2.5 times the revenue per school.  Even if that changes it will change across the board, not just for the Sun Belt and the ratio will remain the same.

  • This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 1.) There is no such thing as the "G5" or "P5 (or 4)" for that matter. We all play in the FBS. 2.) Why in the world when most every FBS school STILL has a shot each year at (and usually does get into) the REAL TOP 25 (if they have their sh!t together) would you want your own pathetic "Top 25" of nobodies.

I'd much rather be ranked 24th in the country in a real poll than #1 in some pathetic spin off poll. We can all keep reducing things down until we get "ranked" at a number that makes us feel special I guess. Why stop at the G5...lets look at enrollment...we can make a top 25 of schools with under 20k...or maybe just look at the Sun Belt...we can assure ourselves of finishing in the top 2 each year if we just look at the state of WV. But hey we can be the #1 University in the city of Huntington each year if we do a ranking of Universities in Huntington, WV. Aughh #1 there we go. We did it! Warm and fuzzies all around!

I don't think the powers that be would have ever thought the smaller schools would be this dumb and embrace the derogatory term "G5". They won't have to kick us out of the FBS...we will kick ourselves out. Psychological warfare. It wasn't even real bait (it should have been a deterrent from breaking away from the FBS and motivation to STAY) and yet we still somehow took it hook, line, and sinker...and found a way to tuck tail and leave. Crazy. The story will go from the larger schools "We never kicked them out...we just called them a name one day and they felt insecure and left."
