  • Dixon melts down in top of 7th. FIU takes a 4-1 lead. Looks like we will be the late game tonight for another chance at FIU tomorrow at noon.

  • I hope some better offense can be generated in the next game tonight.  The bats have been less than stellar.

    Go Herd!

  • FIU has beaten us 3 of 4 games we have played this year. Hopefully we can get in the NCAA if we don't win the tourney.

    Go Herd!

Believe the FIU pitcher who held the Herd to 4 hits is the Conference's freshman of the year.  Doesn't bode well in the long run for Herd softball.  FIU now 45-12; MU is 41-9, pending outcome of its second game today.  Win it, and Herd will have to take two tomorrow against FIU!

  • It's a single elimination championship game.
Win that game and it's over.

Thanks, Daherdboy.  Is our team playing another game tonight or will they play it tomorrow to see who plays FIU?

  • Shonda has made some terrible decisions the last couple games, especially deciding to pinch hit certain people and getting nothing. Would have been better off to let the usual players play. Relied too much on Dixon. Not all her though. No bats all week and major mental errors at crucial times in both games today cost them. Definitely not Herd softball this week. Be a while before they make another run. Lose a strong senior class. Was a great run this year though. Hopefully they get an at large bid.

  • Very disappointing day.  Have to hope for an At-Large Bid now.

3 runs in 2 games against the other best 2 teams in the league isn't going to cut it.  Shonda is going to have to realize that her "small ball" offense can only carry you so far.  Especially when the caliber of the competition gets better, there's no substitute for some offensive punch/power.

I think it would be best for MU if FIU wins tomorrow.  Don't know if CUSA gets 3 bids to the tourney.  If LA Tech gets the automatic bid, FIU has a better overall record than the Herd and they beat us 3 out of 4 games.  Don't believe MU wants to sweat out the selection show on Sunday evening.

Agree, Apollo.  Herd was uncharacteristically sloppy in the field today and on the base paths we had some players thrown out in close plays, attempting to steal, etc., including one close play at the plate in the 6th inning against LA Tech.  Also, in 2 games today we hit into some double plays that just killed potential rallies.  Just not our day/night, I guess!!

  • As much as I hate to say it , I bet the Herd gets left out . I would look for all the SEC to get in which hurts . The Herd had a great year and seems to be poised to make it one next year too.

No way the Herd gets left out. These back to back losses hurt, but still just outside of the top 25, and an rpi in upper 30's with those losses. 41 wins. Regular season champs. They should get an st large

But does this team have another pitcher on the roster?

Yes, I couldn't fathom why (Tribolet? Can't remember who) didn't slide under the catchers arm on that play. Could have been a game changing moment there. Coaches should have been screaming slide.

And no apparently we don't have another pitcher. If they don't trust another pitcher on the roster to give Dixon a couple innings worth of rest why are they wasting a scholarship on them?

  • You just ride the arm but if they melt down it's bad. My wife's friend pitched for Kentucky the last couple years and when she got beat up the wheels were off. But they wouldn't pull her till it was too late. I'm suspecting based off stats Dixon is so much better they are going to let her go and see what happens.

  • Softball relies on one pitcher way too much. You need to have at least two very good pitchers to get though a season and tourney play. Jordan seemed drained and that killed us. Sad for this program we didn't win the tourney. Long shot for NCAA bid now.

  • We certainly didn't see the ladies play the same way this week the way they did all year.  Offense and defense suffered for some reason. I too believe that coach Stanton made some blunders as well.
We just have to keep our fingers crossed that the committee recognizes the body of work these women put in during the long campaign.

  • La Tech beat FIU 1-0 in Championship game on solo HR in top of 7th inn. La Tech get the auto, I would have to think IF there is a second bid, its goes to FIU, they beat us 4 out of 5 I think. I'm a backer of Coach Stanton but LOTS of questionable decisions, plays etc this weekend.

  • We'll see what happens but based on past precidence, we still have a better resume than FIU.

In 2012, we swept UCF at home (they didn't score the entire series), we got a better seed than them for the conference tournament, we made it to the finals (they lost in the first round), and they got a bid while we did not.

Our RPI will still be about 15-20 spots better than FIU's.  I truthfully think we should both be in. Logically, you guys are right with FIU/Marshall, but the past decisions of the selection committee haven't matched that train of thought.

We could get left out. Anything can happen when you leave it in the hands of the committee. That said, our resume warrants a high 3-seed.  We probably were nearing the 2-seed line going into the conference tournament.

I'll be watching Sunday night at 10 on ESPN2. I think Knoxville, Harrisonburg, Ann Arbor, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Oxford or Auburn could be destinations for the Herd next weekend. Or if they get a true 3-seed, they could wind up shipped out west to Tucson, Eugene or Los Angeles. Regardless, I have created flexibility in my schedule to travel next weekend should I desire to take a road trip.
