  • Surprising Charlotte surges into C-USA lead
    By Jack Carey, USA TODAY
Highlights and sidelights from the weekend in men's basketball and a look at the week ahead.
Eddie Basden and the Charlotte 49ers have built a 12-2 record and are undefeated thus far in Conference-USA play.

49ers are finer: While Louisville's rally from a 17-point deficit to win at Cincinnati was the big story Saturday in Conference USA, Charlotte is the only team unbeaten in league play and extended its winning streak to nine.

A 65-59 victory against visiting Saint Louis put the 49ers at 12-2 overall, 3-0 in C-USA. They are in sole possession of first place but might have to do without point guard Mitchell Baldwin for a while after he dislocated his left shoulder Saturday. The 49ers play Cincinnati on Wednesday. The nine-game winning streak is Charlotte's longest since an 11-gamer in 1991-92.

Memphis' blues: Meanwhile, a C-USA team that was supposed to break through nationally just keeps breaking. Memphis forward Sean Banks will be ineligible for the rest of the season because of poor grades, his teammates say.

Following Saturday's 61-59 loss at the buzzer to TCU, Memphis coach John Calipari, citing federal privacy laws, declined to discuss the matter other than to say a final decision hasn't been made.

But several of Banks' teammates told reporters on the record they knew Banks would be ineligible.

Banks already had been suspended once by Calipari this season. After going 22-8 last season and being ranked 23rd in the preseason, the Tigers are 9-8.
         Crunching numbers

32-for-32. Free throw shooting by Wake Forest in its 95-82 victory against North Carolina, an Atlantic Coast Conference record and two short of the NCAA mark. Samford in 1990 and Cal-Irvine in 1981 each shot 34-for-34.

28-9 edge in rebounds, 69% shooting - and a loss. That's what happened to New Mexico in a 64-62 setback at Air Force. The Lobos committed 23 turnovers.

A Rose is a rose: Fordham celebrated the 80th anniversary of its Rose Hill Gym with one of its most gratifying recent wins.

Kevin Anderson's dunk with 4.3 seconds left Sunday gave Fordham a 76-74 victory against Xavier, ending the Rams' 11-game losing streak to the Musketeers.

The first game played at Rose Hill, the oldest building used by a Division I team, came Jan. 16, 1925, a 46-16 win against Boston College.

Youth is served: Auburn freshman Toney Douglas leads the Southeastern Conference in scoring, averaging 19.8 points. Douglas is the only freshman among the top 50 scorers in the nation. He could be the first freshman to lead the SEC in scoring since LSU's Chris Jackson in 1989 (30.2 a game).

Coach falls ill: Oregon State coach Jay John was released from a Seattle hospital Sunday afternoon after an overnight stay, Beavers spokesman Steve Fenk said.

John, 46, was hospitalized Saturday after complaining about chest pains and shortness of breath at halftime of the loss to No. 14 Washington.

Fenk said John's condition is not considered life-threatening but he'll probably have more tests. It's not clear when he'll return to work.

    Key games this week

    • Oklahoma State at Texas (tonight). The Cowboys are perfect in the Big 12, but the Longhorns, who slipped against Texas A&M last week, don't want another loss.

Forward P.J. Tucker, Texas' leading scorer and rebounder, could be facing academic issues that might affect his eligibility, according to the Associated Press.

"There's some stuff going on right now, but we're going to keep it under wraps," Tucker said Saturday after Texas beat Nebraska. "Nothing's happened. Nothing's official, so there's nothing really to talk about."

The second semester at Texas starts Tuesday. Coach Rick Barnes cited privacy issues and declined to discuss the matter.

    • Mississippi State at Alabama (Tuesday). An early league test for a pair of Southeastern Conference heavyweights.

    • Duke at Miami (Fla.) (Wednesday). The Hurricanes were brought into the ACC to bolster football but boast a surprising 3-1 league record.

    • Iowa at Illinois (Thursday). The best chance for the Hawkeyes to make a splash in the Big Ten.

    • Wake Forest at Cincinnati (Saturday). The Demon Deacons continue an impressive non-league tour.

  • I am watching th Charlotte/Cincinatti game on TV and they just said that Charlotte is going to the Atlantic 10 next year. So they won't be in CUSA when we get there. Just wanted to let you know since you thought they were staying in CUSA. But they are playing some good basketball.
