The NCAA and its five power conferences have agreed to allow schools to directly pay players for the first time in the 100-plus-year history of college sports.

The NCAA and its leagues are planning to alert plaintiffs' attorneys Thursday that they are prepared to move forward with a multibillion-dollar agreement to settle three pending federal antitrust cases, sources told ESPN. The NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over 10 years to past and current athletes, according to sources. Sources said the parties also have agreed to a revenue-sharing plan allowing each school to share up to roughly $20 million per year with its athletes.

More in the link above though.

  • This is when parents/students who are paying outrageous athletic fees need to make sure students can opt out of those fees. No way should average college students have to subsidize a few athletes and put themselves thousands of dollars more into debt.
"Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity; they seem more afraid of life than of death"  – James F. Byrnes

Government is the most dangerous institution known to man. Throughout history it has violated the rights of men more than any individual or group of individuals could do: it has killed people, enslaved them, sent them to forced labor and concentration camps, and regularly robbed and pillaged them of the fruits of their expended labor. ~ JOHN HOSPERS

& even worse, when you follow the $ trail...avg college students subsidize --> more student loans --> student loans cancelled by gov't --> taxpayers subsidize NIL

  • Wish they had this when I played college football!(Played D2 mind so probably wouldn't have mattered haha).

But seriously though while I can understand this finally happening, I don't think it is going to go as smooth as the NCAA might think it will. Some shady dealings will still be done.

I just don't like this new landscape in college sports at all.

  • Frustrating for sure, but there isn't a thing any of us can do about it. The P4 conferences will pay their guys directly now out of their huge pot of tv money. I would imagine the good news for us in G5 is that we don't generate a lot of tv revenue, so the players that come here will have to be happy with the scholarship and whatever NIL money they can get.

They have legally drew the line between us and the P4 now. I am thankful to have lived through our rise out of IAA to dominating the MAC and sending a couple guys to the downtown athletic club for the heisman ceremony. And being able to watch the arguably best WR of all time run up and down our field. I'm afraid those days are gone permanently now.

I'll still be in the stands or watching whatever college football looks like for Marshall after all this is complete. Hoping that we are competitive and winning at the highest level possible among our true peers.

  • I wonder what the potential for "New DI subdivision" is referring to?

Believe it would be based on revenue sharing criteria (ex: to be D1 have to be able to revenue share between 5-20 million dollars yearly).
okay with players getting revenue sharing, but not sure when it's all said and done the number of schools to actually afford to do it.

Hoping this will be able to put players in contracts to be here and if they leave money is owed to the school (either from the player or the school taking the player).

If you want to take Micah after being here a year great, he has a $40,000 buyout clause. At least the schools losing the players are getting something out of the investment of the player.

  • Whatever they want, NCAA has been relegated to exactly what it really always was.

  • According to the settlement terms, third-party NIL compensation to athletes outside of the revenue-sharing structure does not count toward the annual cap. The method, using an outside party to facilitate athlete pay, affords schools the ability to exceed the cap, distance themselves from legal issues around Title IX and continue operating as many of them do now ? with the school?s influence but outside of its umbrella.

  • The portal is not addressed in the settlement. However, the new revenue-sharing model gives schools the opportunity to sign athletes to potentially binding, multi-year contracts. Most athletic administrators who spoke to Yahoo Sports believe this will decrease player movement.

Officials are discussing a range of possibilities for athlete contracts, including implementing buyout clauses that are often found in coaching contracts. There is a possibility as well to tie academic performance to contracts.

  • Here?s where this is going.

NCAA completely dissolved .  The mega schools among the P5 form professional leagues in football and basketball.  No limit on how long you play.  No obligation to attend class.  No salary cap.

Schools operate athletically as for profit businesses, exclusively.

Football and men?s basketball remain, all non profit generating sports, players and coaches, are cut.

Schools that do not have the money, just focus on education.
