  • Workers are starting to take out the old synthetic turf from The Dot in preparation for installing the new turf.  (Big smile on my face.)

  • I'm sure cost plays a role but why not go grass?

Just a guess, but suspect ground crew maintenance costs with tough winters and rainy spring are more costly. Especially when you add FICA & Healthcare per person.

  • Look at what that place was built on.

Turf is better. Much better, for our situation.

  • As I said before all of the old turf has  been removed and was power rolled to remove the high spots.
Also, when the new turf is installed, it will have the Marshall "M" in center field and "Thundering Herd" in foul territory down the 1st & 3rd base lines.  Should look great.

  • Dropped by The Dot this PM.  All is quiet.  Waiting for the turf to be delivered.

Kinda looking for Coach Steele to be around....but not yet.  Bet she is still working on getting that pitching coach on board.

  • First baseman Liz DeShields, who started 44 of 46 games this year as a freshman, has transferred to Iowa.

Big loss. She has tremendous upside at the plate to be a true middle order threat through her career.

  • Checked out the Iowa Softball website and it does report a big signing in Elizabeth Deshields from Marshall.

Checked out Iowa's softball record last season and it was a losing record.
Not a very good season plus Iowa is up against pretty stiff competition with Michigan & Minnesota.

  • On second thought, I checked out the incoming Herd freshmen recruits and saw that a power hitting first baseman is coming in.  Aly Harrell can really pound the ball and on paper looks like a great replacement for Deshields.  Maybe Deshields saw the writing on the wall.

It would be rare for a true freshmen to come in and play/hit better than a upper classmen starter. Could happen I guess. Maybe the young lady saw that the new coach wasn't the quality replacement the girls had hoped for. Who knows.

  • I am waiting for the announcement of the new pitching coach, which is a big factor in the success of this new coaching staff.  With an excellent pitching coach, who can recruit as well as develop players, MU can continue on the road to success.

  • Half of the outfield turf has been layed down (left field to center).  Trimming and attaching to follow.

Will take a while to get it all done.  But it is going in.

  • Drove by yesterday (Wednesday) evening and the turf was being finalized in all of the outfield.
Need to do down the foul lines and the infield.  Men were still working and additional work was being done.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

I'm hoping that doesn't mean the undertakers are there burying the program. ;D

  • I think Coach Steele has all the players needed (plus the recruits coming in) to continue the program down a championship path minus one.  Plan on meeting the new coach next Thursday.....to say "Hi" and ask a few questions.   ;)

  • Drove by The Dot today and turf was down on all but the foul territories and most of the warning track.  Field needs to dry out from the rain and the finishing of the laying of the turf needs to be done as well as the infield synthetic "dirt" needs to be added.  Should be completed next week.

  • Go to the Marshall Gameday app and look for the video plus interviews on the new turf installation at The Dot.  The field is looking fantastic.  Also liked a comment at the bottom of the video.....The Dot needs lights.
