With this latest Allied contribution, Marshall has raised its maximum of $15 million in private donations, which, with the match from the trust fund, will result in a $30 million benefit to the university. The program has led to the creation of 16 new research endowments at Marshall and will increase the university’s overall endowment by more than 15 percent.

“It is entirely fitting that Allied Realty Company made the donation that brings us to our goal,” said Marshall President Stephen J. Kopp. “Allied was the first private donor to step forward when the trust fund program was established, and they have been supporting research at Marshall with generous donations ever since. The Polan family and their company are community leaders in every sense. We are fortunate to have their commitment to advancing local and regional economic development through research.”

Allied Realty Company President Rebecca Polan said MIIR’s role of conducting commercially viable bioscience research at the university and facilitating partnerships with outside companies is vital to the future of Huntington and the entire region.

  • I saw an article on this yesterday in the Herald Dispatch and the 15% increase of the University's endowment really jumped out at me.  not sure what it is right now, i want to say 70-80 million range,  but that is a significant increase.

Another article said that plans had been changed to build a building on the current site of Laidley Hall, because of the international program to bring in international students was expected to bring several hundred new international students each year to MU.  So they were re-looking at their plans and wanted to look more toward housing type structures.

  • "We have a set of projects in the $110 million range that we are committed to building if we have sufficient funds," Kopp said.

Dr Kopp's quote in the second article seems to shed some doubt about all the projects being built, Vision campaign to fund the projects appears to be behind schedule.

With the economy still sluggish and the coal industry closing mines it's a tough time to be out there fund raising in a coal mining state.  Closing mines not only causes us to lose coal jobs but also other jobs and businesses such as supplies, equipment manufactures, truck drivers, railway workers, long shoremen, etc.  Some people are saying natural gas will make up where the coal mines leave off...  Haven't seen it here and nothing on the horizon.  Maybe in the Morgantown area.

  • Dd WVU reach their goal of 35 million for sure? I believe the agreement was that if either school did not reach their goal then the other school could use the others with matching funds until the 50 million was gone.

  • I honestly didn't think that Marshall would met their goal, I'm willing to bet that the legislators didn't think they would either and that's why they put the clause in there that would give WVU a chance to match the remaining money.

Seems to be an awful lot of activity here in North Central WV (Ritchie & Dodridge Counties) as far as Oil & Gas drilling.
