  • Certainly, a lot of available housing to be had at cheap prices, given the continuing population decline of many decades.  Of course, many of those available houses will need EXTENSIVE REMODELING, if not complete RAZING, given their run-down condition and often long-vacated status!!!  So, wherever you are, HURRY ON DOWN to Huntington, West "By God" Virginia ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  P.S., It needs "the people"!! (Pssst:  Plenty of "FREE NEEDLES" available also!!!).

Oh please!!!! Most of that decline like many cities is loss of manufacturing base thru the years. That happened all across the country. How many plants has Huntington lost since 1970? As Ross Perot said "there will be a giant sucking sound". And he was right !!!

  • Proper leadership will transition Huntington into a "cool" college town and place to live.  This can happen with President Smith growing MU with forward thinking new degrees that attract students, Huntington leadership aided new business with proper incentives, the state adding incentives for new business.

I just visited and liked what I saw going on with new buildings and some trendy spots around.

  • The key will be making this a place young people and families will want to move to and stay. Must reverse the population loss and brain drain. We can make this town the jewel of the state and with Marshall's growth, the place to be in the region. Jmho

Sorry bust, but "ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY" is NOT losing population!!!!!  The population figures from the Census from 2020 to  2023 i noted in another thread indicated that ALL WV counties in and around Huntington continue to LOSE population currently.  Even the figure for Putnam County indicated a small percentage drop!  Not every "rust belt" City in the US which has had a decline in manufacturing is STILL losing population like you seem to suggest.

Yes, hopefully new leadership at MU and coming for the City will make positive changes in terms of the Economy, Job growth, etc., which will positively affect the population figures EVENTUALLY.  Just no evidence visible as of yet of a change in the long running trend.  Certainly, putting the guy who was in charge of the Huntington City government for the last several years into the Governor's chair in Charleston wouldn't be an indication of any POSITIVE change in the State's overall fortunes for the immediate future, IMO, given his "exemplary record" at City Hall in H-town!!!

I'm talking where there was a large manufacturing base. Huntington had a lot of plants for a city its size and those are all gone. That alone is going to affect your population. Houdaille, nickel plant, American car, Owens, etc,,,

I think there has been very clear and very visible positive growth for the city of Huntington in the last 10 years. It's definitely a better place now than it was 10 years ago. Lots of work still to do and all of WV needs fo tackle the dwindling population problem. But, Huntington has definitely made strides to be a better place in recent years.
