  • I'm still in on Rece. It wasn't a bad freshman year by any means. He won us the ODU game when we stalled time after time.

But interesting thought. Instead of ever recruiting a kicker from high school again, why not just pluck a D2 kicker as needed. You know what their college tape looks like, they've performed at a college level. Seems like an easy fix.

  • Why are we adding a senior QB to the roster?

Multiple reasons to do so. Bring in an older guy to help bring some overall maturity to the room, and worst case scenario is he adds quality depth. Can never have too much depth at QB.

  • My guess is to give the underclassmen on the bench another year before giving them the starting position, or as primary backup..

  • Yeah, looking for "signings" instead of "social media" postings at this stage.  When signed, sealed and on, or heading to, campus, then we can get excited!!

Because once they?re signed that means they?re committed? Hmmm?

Well gee, "Einstein", the actual signing and submission of the actual letter of intent is an example of "commitment"!  Much more so than one of "dozens" or more daily social media postings that young people, including high school and other athletes make DAILY, if not more.  Of course, no one, Coaches on down, know exactly how "deeply" that commitment is until the student athletes are on campus, going to classes, participating in practices, etc.  At that point, then both the student-athletes and the Coaches will both begin to evaluate the depth of their (the athletes) "commitments"!

  • Simmons listed at 6'2" and 210 pounds and averaged 10.8 per catch with his longest 39 yards and he was the third leading receiver on the SFA team.

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/team/stats/_/id/2617/stephen-f-austin-lumberjacks

He started out at VA Tech and was considered a 3 star recruit.
Virginia Tech wide receiver Darryle Simmons has opted to enter his name in the 2020 NCAA Transfer Portal, 247Sports has learned.
Simmons, a member of Virginia Tech?s 2018 signing class, has played sparingly during his time in Blacksburg,
After suffering an injury late in his high school career, Simmons redshirted during his first season at Virginia Tech, logging snaps against William and Mary and Marshall.
In 2019, Simmons played in five games, recording one catch against Rhode Island.
This fall, the 6-foot 2-inch, 207-pounder has played in just one game.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Simmons was considered a three-star recruit by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite ranking system. He was listed as the No. 451 overall recruit nationally and the No. 74 wide receiver in his class at the time of his signing.
He chose Virginia Tech over offers from Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, and others.

With his stats over the past 3 seasons Huff must have plans for him at a position other than WR.  Good luck to him and welcome to the Herd.

The Tennessee website doesn't have much information on Luke, except he is listed a redshirt freshman. I don't know if this is the most current information?

Per ESPN website it looks like he punted four times against TN Tech. Four punts for an average of 38.5 with a long of 55 yards. It is hard to tell much from those limited stats since it was only one game.
    https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4875212/kolby-morgan

He had offers out of high school from TN Tech; Cumberland; USMA and USNA. Probably a good student and person since he had offers from West Point and Annapolis. Most schools don't scholarships to punters, if I remember correctly?

  • I wonder why we are recruiting a punter? Didn't McConnell play well last season, he had 71 punts for an average of 38.5yd with a long of 64 yards?

Last season was very inconsistent to poor on special teams last year.  From kicking, punting and return/block coverages.  Hopefully this kid is an upgrade.

Mean averages for punting can be very misleading.
What are more important is the mode for yards (indicates consistancy), accuracy (in other words, nearer one sideline or another or inside the 10, etc), the mode for hangtime and the mean net yards.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

I realize all those things, I did play football. Thanks to muherd34 for answering my question.
