I have no idea what to make of the hire, but you're reaching for criticism with that one. From HerdZone's website:

The aforementioned Taylor finished his career on UT-Martin teams that went 21-13 and 20-15 so you could argue Jackson's recruiting significantly elevated the level of talent at one of the worst schools in one of the worst D1 conferences.

Still means there was a coach, with the final say, above him.  And, of course, there was a coach above him who had his own system that he implemented and parameters that Corny had to work within.  He's seen how not to run a few programs.  Let's see if he's figured out a few things.  It's done.  No choice but to make the best of it.  Maybe some of the guys he wanted to bring in over the years are in the portal now with actual good game stats and he still has a relationship with them.

I keep hearing that a coach can?t recruit without a long contract.  Although that used to be true, it doesn?t matter anymore.  These players could care less about loyalty and if the coach has a 3 year contract. Basically the only thing that matters is the here and now.

With the portal, it no longer matters if the coach has a long-term deal or not.  This is obviously what Marshall had to do in order to get rid of DD and still keep major donor support.  If he doesn't succeed, then he'll be relieved of his duties and Spears will conduct a national search for his replacement.  If he does succeed, then even better.  If Corny wins, we all win.

Could be short term. I see it as a "prove it" deal that will be extended if he has a great season. This way he gets his chance without Marshall getting locked in to a potential large buy out of things don't go well.

if it had to be Corny for whichever reasons, then a 1 or 2 Yr deal may be the best we could hope for.  the only thing i don't like is that Spears (or whomever) allowed roster changes (scholarship movement) prior to coaching change or as a conditionon for change.

it's apparent most agree Corny inherited a team with a couple/a few game-day players.  certainly not several.  how much freedom he has with recruiting and other roster aspects is the big question.

at the moment, there are aproximately 4 scholarships to give and that could still change.  odds of him adding 4 or more game-day players that will mesh to be successfully competitive as a team the next 2 Yrs is slim.  certainly, there are exceptions and it can be done and that brings a small ray of hope.  lets hope the reason Corny would be out after 2 Yrs is that he gets another offer he can't refuse.

ask coach Caldwell, even though she now knows where MU women stand on a national scale (the national scale should be the ultimate goal regardless of the overwhelming odds).  now, so do her peers in the SBC, but she has a leg up on them if she has forward vision, works double hard and continues to innovate and be flexible, no matter how small or large those innovations.

like most of you, i resigned myself to and came around to realize that the SBC, if nothing else at the time, was a huge opportunity for MU and especially men's basketball.  really, all other sports, as well, except we knew football was going to be perhaps the most challenging of all.  time is slipping away (since the 4 joined, since NIL and portal) as the rest of the SBC will bring up their game as they've slowly been doing for a decade give or take.

The portal actually offers Corny a fairer chance of turning things around than the old rules.  It would have taken him at least two seasons under the old rules to try to turn things around.  With the portal, he can turn things around much quicker. 

Spears is going to have some tough decisions to make in both revenue sports.  He currently has two coaches on "prove-it" deals.  What is the threshold for them to be brought back?  Unfortunately, none of the journalist that cover Marshall sports seem to want to ask the tough questions to get the answer.  Spears needs to force whomever puts the basketball schedule together, to schedule fairly and not stack the deck on way or another.  In my profession, we use the term "fail fast".  This means to recognize your mistakes quickly, so you can correct them and productively move forward.  Marshall needs to "fail fast" with Corny and not drag this out for years, if it is abundantly clear he is not right for the job.

Hopefully Corny will continue to be an outstanding recruiter at Marshall, so we can have 20 wins and 15 losses and finish tied for 4th in our conference, then enter a pay for a trophy tournament and get bounced in the 1st or 2nd game, because we?re never seen coaching/recruiting anywhere near as good as that.  Complete and total upgrade all the way around.

You're still assuming that he had the final say on who got on the team and any say on how they played the game, and also that he hasn't progressed any in almost a decade.  It's a fallacy to make those assumptions.  I expect that this will go the way you and most people believe it will.  IMO, Corny will not magically make us better.  But we have to show Dan's supporters this for a season so they can agree and it's already been done so the best we can do is be curious to see it unfold.  Might as well let it.
