Channel 12 TV out of Clarksburg announced the move as part of their sports reporting at 6pm.

Guess it's true.

Maybe the closing of the Savannah Restaurant/Grill was the final straw that doomed the Huntington bid.  Perhaps the folks doing the City's presentation should have more strongly emphasized the plethora of SHEETZ gas stations in and around H-town and the great line of "hot and delicious" foods they offer which all those hungry football fans just "crave"!!

The stadium itself is terrible and frankly the neighborhood is too, but the turf is fairly new. It was being redone when we were there for a track meet about 2 years ago.

Also on the evening news, channel 8, some upgrades on UC Stadium were already underway/planned BEFORE the game site announcement and indicate a lot will be done this spring and summer, like restrooms, maybe concessions, etc.  Look for some support, aid, etc., forthcoming from the City also.  This is the kind of positive and proactive involvement that Charleston's forward-thinking Mayor looks for.  After all, she isn't OBSESSED 23 and a half hour a day with gimmicks like handing out free needles at every intersection of her City!!!

I think its smart of Charleston to go after the sports dollar. Travel sports are big business and big money to be spent. Sports U'tainment is a thing these days. Kudos to them.

Beats financing your city on drug money and government drug funds/grants.

I agree.  And face it, of the sites bidding on the playoffs, it's the most centrally located of the bidders.  Especially with the Interstates being mapped out the way they were no place offers more possibility for one day travel to see games.

Totally agree. Shame what's evolved with Huntington over the last 7-8 years. And the Mayor wonders why everyone (including businesses) are leaving Huntington and moving to Barboursville, Milton, Hurricane and Teays Valley.....lol.

Charleston. It's the worst, by far.

Wheeling has been doing it for years, so they do a better job, plus the stadium is better.
Marshall/WVU the kids get to play in the biggest stadiums and both cities have stuff to do.
Bluefield is a historic field, voted one of the best in the country for HS.
Charleston is ghetto and has a rundown, crappy stadium.

The Huntington/Morgantown bid that would trade championship game sites between Joan C. Edwards and Milan Puskar stadiums had a few concerns that were apparent when the SSAC visited both locations.

?The committees they had together were very hospitable and took time to show us the facilities and comment on some of our concerns,? Price said. ?Both stadiums are beautiful venues. The concerns were the dressing rooms to start. We would have to use makeshift dressing rooms in their facilities buildings. We couldn?t use their home locker rooms because those are [in use] year-round.

?The facilities do not have additional locker rooms other than visiting ones. We were concerned about makeshift locker rooms within the facilities buildings in the practice facilities. They wanted to use a large curtain to separate teams. The teams would?ve been dressing behind curtains and walking to the stadium.

?The other part of what we do is our academic awards banquet. Neither school was prepared to be able to pull that off because it?s more than just the football game.

?I talked with [WVU football coach] Neal Brown, [WVU athletic director] Wren Baker, [Marshall athletic director] Christian Spears and [Marshall associate athletic director for facilities and operations] Andrew Brown. They all want to grow this sport in West Virginia and be a part of it and help however they can.?

Another piece to the larger puzzle Price noted was the new format for the championship games.

The format, before the four-class system was adopted into football, was one game at 7 p.m. on Friday then games at noon and at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The new schedule is noon and 7 p.m. on Friday then the same times on Saturday.

The parking situation was discussed when Huntington and Morgantown were bidding.

Price reassures that action will be taken for it to be as convenient for spectators.

?The parking is a huge concern and not being able to have, not only adequate parking, but any parking in Morgantown or Huntington,? Price said. ?Marshall?s stadium lot is used for parking for classes and typically full while WVU?s is occupied by Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Imagine if we'd passed the table gaming and bookmaking for the Huntington area a decade ago or so when it was voted on.  There would be a reason to bring sports in and the money to fund a lot other things too.  A casino downtown with sports betting would draw a lot of people from all over the tri-state.  People didn't want that because they felt it would bring in a bad element.  So they chose drugs instead.  At least the drugs never brought in a bad element /s

Great point. I wish the city would convert the ACF property into a sports complex, soccer fields, softball and baseball, with an indoor multipurpose court. Use  it for travel tourneys. This is big business and could be used most weeks of the year. Lots of money spent and taxes gained on those dollars
As much as I would like to believe there will be businesses there, I highly doubt we ever see anything significant built there.
