  • Big match 1pm today at Hoops. It is being shown on ESPN+.

If the Herd can win this match and the upcoming match against #18 UK on Thursday, we will be the driver?s seat for a conference title and should break the top 10 again.

We have been defending very well. Probably better than last season. We just need more consistency from the front third.

  • So far the herd has dominated but score is still 0 - 0 with 5:50 left in first half.

  • I don't know anything about soccer but it looks to me like we are dominating everywhere but the scoreboard.

0-0 at halftime...I think it's halftime anyway. 2 halves or 3 periods in soccer?

  • Marshall outshot FIU 10 to 2. We have dominated possession. So close to making a couple goals.

Unfortunately Max Schneider and Roberts both suffered injuries and had to leave the match. Hopefully they will return in the second half.

  • So a yellow card doesn't really mean anything at the end of the day?

OK...so the first one doesn't do anything though, other than a warning? If you get two, does that mean just that player is gone, or does it mean the team will also play with 1 less player the rest of the game?

  • 2 yellow cards you are gone and your team plays down a player for the rest of the match.

  • That was an example of 2 yellow cards on the same FIU player which led to a red card and disqualification.

Marshall will be playing up 1 man into overtime.

The FIU goalkeeper has played the match of his life. 14 saves.

    Heading to first overtime.

  • The Herd was dominate all day but just couldn?t get it in the net until 2 minutes into overtime.

    Outshot FIU 28 to 6
Shots on goal 15 to 2
    Corner kicks 10 to 2

If Charlotte holds on with their 1 - 0 lead today, we will be tied with them for first place in conference.

We have a Big match coming up Thursday against ranked Kentucky.

  • This goalie for FIU is impressive.

He really was.  A good college goalie can make a couple of outstanding diving saves a game.  But this guy had half a dozen amazing punch outs without ever missing a single one.

This match was giving me that terrible feeling that after dominating the whole game that we were going to give up an unlucky goal and lose.  It almost happened when the Ref called a penalty just outside our box.  Another 2 feet and it would have been a penalty kick.  Watching the replay, it was a really dumb foul by the Marshall defender.

And then the soccer gods smiled on us when after the free kick FIU's #7 -- who was playing out of control at several moments in the game -- just ran into our guy after he blew the free kick.  It was an easy yellow to give (and possibly also earned by his general reckless play) and was his second and therefore earned him a red.

Not surprised but so pleased that we scored off a corner kick header 2 minutes into Overtime.  2nd balls are killers.

This team is fun to watch and play a beautiful passing style of soccer.

  • Was really fun to watch. I love that our team is aggressive and always trying to score. Watching the game it was obvious who the better team was, but I thought we were going to lose on that free kick(?) by FIU at the end.

This was only the 2nd soccer game I've watched my entire life, but I can say I will watch more.

  • I am proud of the team and rooting for them all the way, though I also have not been able to get into soccer. As the old joke goes, why do so many people play soccer? So they won't have to watch it. But I'm all for them winning it all!

My thought as well.  As someone else has pointed out the second time I've watched an entire match.  Much of my lack of interest stems from a lack of knowledge in the game, but I can't see myself wanting to learn that much about it either.

As others have said in my view we dominated the game, yet it was tied at the end of the regulation. It was almost won in the last few minutes by FIU and while the sudden death nature of OT was certainly exciting, there is too much luck involved in Soccer for me to take the game seriously.

Bust, I think if you watch the Herd play a few matches you would grow to enjoy Herd soccer. The style (outstanding passing and ball control, attacking offense, good defense, etc.) is somewhat similar to the style of game that Dantoni has tried to implement for MBB. The difference is the soccer team plays very well together at a higher level, are consistent in their play, have better athletes for the sport, and probably are better coached.

The way they play, each match is fun to watch regardless if they win. Unfortunately the BB team isn?t consistent and can be quite frustrating to watch at times. This is from someone who wouldn?t miss watching or listening to Herd basketball from the 70s onward.

As others noted, as much as we dominated, with a little bad luck we could have lost in regulation. Sometimes you need the ball to bounce your way.

With that said, it is not inconceivable that this team could make it to the final eight or even the final four this year. Without the early red card against Akron we could be undefeated at this point. Akron played in the NCAA championship match a few years ago and is highly ranked this year.

Lol, ever watch football or basketball. Or any sport? Luck is a part of every sport, except maybe, bowling.

  • It?s a great game to watch once you learn the rules, formations, runs, etc. This team is the closest thing we will have to being  big time than any other Marshall sport. Grassie is the real deal.
