NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) ? Old Dominion men?s basketball head coach Jeff Jones is retiring from coaching after 32 years as a head coach, including 11 with the Monarchs.
?It?s just very, very simple, it?s time,? an emotional Jones said in a press conference announcing his retirement on Monday. ?When I thought about it, there?s still a part of me, not an insignificant part, that wants to coach. There?s nothing more than I would like to do than come back another year and kind of fix things, to go out on a different note, so to speak.?

I kind of figured with his health issues his days of coaching were over.

See, it's really easy for a coach to issue a nice, short statement that he's "retiring." Let's hope we see one locally in about 2 weeks.

I wish him nothing but the best health wise, but this is a good thing for ODU basketball program. Their program had become stagnant (sound familiar) and with the right hire they could be a consistent top 3 program in this league.

Wanna bet that ODU goes out and gets an alum and former Monarch player who is in his mid to late seventies to be their next Head Coach? Didn't think so!

The guy they are likely to hire is the guy that I wanted to bring here.
ODU will likely hire an alum in Mike Jones who was a long time head coach at DeMatha where they named the court after him. He is currently an associate head coach at University of Maryland where he recently landed 5-star recruit Derrick Queen for next year's class. He was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech when they won the ACC.
If ODU hires Jones, then watch out. He is a big name in the DMV and up I-95 into Baltimore and Philly. Mike will bring in some serious talent.

I wish Jeff Jones the best. He has coached for a long time with good success. Hope his health improves as well.
