Officers returned to headquarters to log the powder as evidence later that day. As one officer processed the contents of the paper while wearing gloves, he and another officer, who was uninvolved but standing nearby along with other officers, began to feel the effects of what they thought could be an oncoming opioid overdose, Ciccarelli said. While Huntington police handle suspected heroin as evidence daily, a combative prisoner lodged in the nearby booking facility may have contributed to a lapse in concentration, Ciccarelli said, allowing the powder to become airborne.

Both officers managed to self-administer Narcan via nasal spray, which is the drug commonly used by first responders to treat opioid overdoses, and quickly recovered. The two officers, whose names were not released, were hospitalized for observation before being released with no further injury. Both have since returned for work. This is the first time a Huntington police officer has required treatment for an accidental drug exposure.

  • That's scary. If it's that easy for it to enter your system they need to come up with a better process to handle and transport. That's stuff is so potent I would be wearing a disposable hazmat suit and mask.

I agree it is scary! This incident has happened in other cities. It's worse than a meth lab and as you said, so potent! I personally feel anyone that sells "heroin" is a killer! They should be locked up for a very long time.

  • Something else pointed out by Ciccarelli is squeezing the dye out of dry-erase markers onto the pills for dealers to mark or brand them, which brings more bad chemicals to the mix! Thus, the different colors of the pills.

    Good grief!

Used to be heroin got cut so many times sometimes it was pretty weak by the time it got to the user, but it was inconsistent.  A lot of ODs happened when shooting up with stuff that was three or four times as strong as usual and didn't realize it.  Now I'm reading that the stuff that is out there is so potent that if it gets airborne someone needs a dose of Narcan?  Accessible, potent and deadly, and people do it to themselves.  It's a messed up world out there.
