  • Not to seem uncaring about him but every wildlife fanatic that befriends wild animals takes the risk of the animal doing something "wild".  I'm really quite impressed he was able to live as long as he has.

The more you put yourself at risk the higher chance you have for something terrible to happen.  I learned this at 25 yo.

  • Im am truly saddened. It was a 'freak accident' where the sting ray barb penitrated his chest and pierced his heart injecting a poison.

Strang thing is, I just got back from the Cayman Islands swimming with sting rays and handeling them.

Yep, I'm with you. Surprised he made it this long. The man died doing what he loved. That being said, my 6-year old daughter is one of his biggest fans. We said a prayer for him and his family last night.

  • The sting-rays in the atlantic/carribean are much more docile than the rays over here for some reason.  There is a sting ray cleaning station in the lagoon here in SPN, sometimes you will see 10-15 rays at a time lined up there waiting their turn.  The dive masters always make sure we start out about 200 yards away and stay close to the surface of the lagoon to make ourselves less of a target.
They are cool to look at, but nothing like the Manta-rays, especially in Yap they are HUGE, and their are often dozens of them!!!
