Title: Outside of politics, can we talk about music of the 60's, 70's and today...
Post by: The E-Man on October 11, 2019, 04:04:02 PM
Who remembers this song? Spiral Staircase, I love you more today, than yesterday..
This is a great song. When I first heard it as a very young kid, I loved it. I always thought the singer was a black dude..Not that white people can't sing, it's just this dude voice was soulful just like David Clayton Thomas of Blood, Sweat, & Tears. This song had great lyrics, " I thank the lord for love like ours that grows ever stronger And I always will be true I know you feel the same way too.. When was the last time you heard mentioning of the lord in a pop song?  I had a rapper give me his CD as a sample recently. He wanted my take on it and I gave it back to him. He ask me, why? I told him brother, it's not the music, but the lyrics they are filled with to much cussing for my ears. I'm so thankful and blessed to have grown up in an era where music had a real meaning.. What's your take on today's music? BTW, Check out this bad ass Russian band that has done a few covers of Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago, and Blood, Sweat & Tears...

I believe it was Chris Rock that said todays R&B sucked , and I agree . With all the talented blcak singers out there , hip hop is whats popular , I DONT GET IT !!  I hope the day comes soon where talent is appreciated , white or black groups that can sing are so easy to listen to and can really set the mood.

I am a collector of music, mainly on vinyl. I agree that the music of today is not that good, at least to my ears. I think back to Aretha, Smokey, and many other vocalists and I just wonder where it went. I am looking at a bunch of 45's I purchased a couple of weeks ago and the artists bring back memories. And I agree with E-Man, More Today Than Yesterday is a great song.

These days you can't make it without overproduction coupled with sex appeal.  A good voice doesn't matter and neither do good looks.

The Stones, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan would have no chance.  Having talent and a good song are secondary.

I listened to Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner" the other night.  Just a simple song with a simple message that many of us can relate to, and he had a lot of them.  I think he was one of the great nearly forgotten poets of popular music.  None of those guys would have a chance to become well known outside of National Public Radio these days.

So sad.  We need true poetry in our music again.  It is sad that our music too often is noise, and that the we call art too often is ugly.

Blue-Eyed soul... I was watching a documentary on the Allman Brothers Band and a guy was talking about how when the ABB first started putting stuff out, people would hear the music and they thought Gregg Allman was an older black man. They had no idea he was a 20 something long haired hippy.

E, you should watch the Ken Burns "Country Music" documentary on PBS. It's great. It talks a lot about how country music's roots is basically a big melting pot. They talk about how the banjo came from Africa with the slaves, the fiddle from the British isles, etc. He touched a lot on how music crossed the racial divide, even in the segregated south. It's a really cool documentary. I highly recommend it.

I'm a huge fan of REAL country music. Not the crap they play on the radio with the snap beats and hiphoppin' about tailgates and girls singing in the passenger seat. I like the real traditional stuff. That said, it's amazing the amount of great African American country singers that are coming out now. They sing real stuff, so they won't get played on the radio, but do a little digging and you can find them. Everybody knows about Darius Rucker, but check out guys like Milton Patton and especially Tony Jackson. Tony is the real deal. Charley Crockett is half black and he's very traditional, down to the way he dresses. I saw him live not long ago and it's like he stepped right out of 1962. He's got a cool story too. A real hobo who used to hop freight trains to travel between New York and New Orleans to play music on the streets. You have guys like Benton Blount, who is half black. I could go on. Check these guys out. I like seeing a little flava getting mixed into my music.

Im all for the older type of country music , the new stuff is almost ,if not already there , is pop music . I guess they try to blur the lines so they can get the most play/money/audience. Most people dont associate country music with anything other than rednecks but Rucker showed if it sounds good , people will listen , regardless of what the guy looks like . C. Pride was great , wish he still was hitting the charts . I really wish country music would go back to its roots , if it takes black folk to start doing it , more power to em' . Youll only get a big thank you from me.

If you like real music from modern artists, there are options out there, you just have to search for it. Especially if you like stuff from the outlaw era. Check out guys like Jamey Johnson, Alex Williams, Cody Jinks, Ward Davis, Colter Wall, Dallas Moore, Gethen Jenkins (originally from Huntington), Dillon Carmichael, Whitey Morgan & the 78s, just to name a few. Sturgill SIMpson’s older stuff from before he got burnt out on DMT and started thinking he was the hick Roger Waters is great. If you like stuff with a deep Appalachian sound and incredible songwriting, check out Louisa’s own Tyler Childers. If you like mellow stuff I highly recommend Brent Cobb and also Mike & the Moonpies. Brent Cobb is a great songwriter. He’s been called a little redneck Paul Simon. Mike & the Moonpies will have you thinking that you are  bootscootin’ through the smoke across Gilley’s dance floor in 1979. A lot of the Texas/Oklahoma red dirt country is good too. If you like southern rock, listen to Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers, and the Steel Woods.

EDIT: Billy Strings is a must if you like bluegrass and you can add the Marcus King Band on here for some southern soul.

As a kid, I remembered Porter Wagner, Hank Williams, George Jones, Tammy Wynette.. I even seen a tribute at the Keith-Albee to the late great Patsy Cline, great show! Music has a Universal appeal and crosses all racial barriers. I remember watching the Temptations show and they where playing in Alabama in the 60's doing  racial tensions. The Temps performed and the white people were on one side and the blacks on the other, yet they all jammed and had a great time together. My two favorite bands are Earth, Wind & Fire, and Chicago. They made hit after hit and was a world wide appeal. Earth, Wind & Fire concerts were the greatest! Phil Collins and many others agreed the Fire was the best! In fact, if you had ever been to an Earth, Wind & Fire concert they had the local Fire Department on standby, because The Fire was known to burn the house down, Ya Dig!  :) EWF study Egyptology and it showed with their on stage  African extravagant wardrobe. Here's a few takes from EWF, 1981 in concert...Check out the Darth Vader scenes between good and bad on "The Battle" video..

Great thread on music. I really liked the Tony Jackson song and Billy Strings plays some amazing bluegrass.

I've been a record collector since the sixties collecting roots music like rockabilly, country, Mississippi Delta blues, rock 'n' roll, R & B etc.,

So right now I'm in a honky tonk mood.

Received a record player a couple of years ago and have slowly been increasing my record collection.  Have some friends that have bought me some as well.  Having difficulty finding any Muddy Waters records ("used" not new). Never thought records would make a comeback!

I gotta get back to WV and pickup my parents records (currently stored away).  Some are the old 45s that had 2 songs on each side!  A lot of 50s rock n roll (my dad) and country (my mom).

BTW, have you heard what is the first Rock ‘n’ Roll record/song?

Some of the best finds or rarest records are in old attics and store rooms. First pressings or original copies of groups like The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Elvis could be valuable, especially any Sun records of Elvis.

I'd have to agree with CoachSkip to an extent, I always heard it was Ike Turner as well. But, If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was either Little Richard or The Isley Brothers.. Help us out on this:)

This may help . its from Wikipedia . Its a long read I know but its pretty informative

The identity of the first rock and roll record is one of the most enduring subjects of debate among rock historians.[97] Various recordings dating back to the 1940s and 1950s have been cited as the first rock and roll record.[98] A number of sources have considered the first to be "Rocket 88", which was recorded in 1951 by Ike Turner and his band, but credited to his saxophonist and the song's vocalist Jackie Brenston.[99] According to The Boston Globe's Joan Anderman, most rock historians cite it as the first,[100] while The New Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll and the website of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said that it is "frequently cited" and "widely considered the first", respectively.[99] People in the music industry have also called it the first, among several others.[101] "Rocket 88" is cited for its forceful backbeat and unrefined, distorted electric guitar.[102] By contrast, writer and musician Michael Campbell wrote that, "from our perspective," it was not the first rock and roll record because it had a shuffle beat rather than the rock rhythm originally characteristic in Chuck Berry's and Little Richard's songs, although he added that "Rocket 88" had basic characteristics of rock music such as the emphasis on guitar and distortion.[103] Its characterization as a rock and roll or rhythm and blues song continues to be debated. Nigel Williamson questions whether it was really an R&B song "with an unusually fast, bottom-heavy eight-to-the bar boogie rhythm and a great lyric about cars, booze and women".[104]

The music historian Robert Palmer wrote that Goree Carter's earlier 1949 song "Rock Awhile" is a "much more appropriate candidate" than "the more frequently cited" "Rocket 88", primarily because of the presence of loud electric guitar work on the former song.[81] Palmer wrote that "Rocket 88" is credited for its raucous saxophone, boogie-woogie beat, fuzzy amplified guitar, and lyrics that celebrate the automobile.[105] However, he regards "Rock Awhile" to be a more appropriate candidate for the "first rock and roll record" title, because it was recorded two years earlier, and because of Carter's guitar work bearing a striking resemblance to Chuck Berry's later guitar work, while making use of an over-driven amplifier, along with the backing of boogie-based rhythms, and the appropriate title and lyrical subject matter.[81] Roger Wood and John Nova Lomax also have cited "Rock Awhile" as the first rock & roll record.[106][107] Others have taken the view that the first was Roy Brown's "Good Rocking Tonight", or Wynonie Harris' 1948 version; the song received greater exposure when Elvis Presley covered it in 1954.[108] Sister Rosetta Tharpe's 1944 song "Strange Things Happening Every Day" has also been viewed as among the first.[71]

Most rock historians have cited Bill Haley's 1953 song "Crazy Man, Crazy" as the first rock and roll record to reach the Billboard charts.[109] Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" released in 1954 was the first rock and roll record to achieve significant commercial success and was joined in 1955 by a number of other records that pioneered the genre.[98] Along with "Rock Around the Clock", several rock critics also have pointed to Presley's "That's All Right" from 1954 as a candidate for the first rock and roll record.[110]

The 1992 book What Was the First Rock'n'Roll Record? by Jim Dawson and Steve Propes[51] discusses 50 contenders, from Illinois Jacquet's "Blues, Part 2" (1944) to Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" (1956), without reaching a definitive conclusion. In their introduction, the authors claim that since the modern definition of rock 'n' roll was set by disc jockey Alan Freed's use of the term in his groundbreaking The Rock and Roll Show on New York's WINS in late 1954, as well as at his Rock and Roll Jubilee Balls at St. Nicholas Arena in January 1955, they chose to judge their candidates according to the music Freed spotlighted: R&B combos, black vocal groups, honking saxophonists, blues belters, and several white artists playing in the authentic R&B style (Bill Haley, Elvis Presley). The artists who appeared at Freed's earliest shows included orchestra leader Buddy Johnson, the Clovers, Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, the Moonglows, Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters, and the Harptones. That, say Dawson and Propes, was the first music being called rock and roll during that short time when the term caught on all over America. Because the honking tenor saxophone was the driving force at those shows and on many of the records Freed was playing, the authors began their list with a 1944 squealing and squawking live performance by Illinois Jacquet with Jazz at the Philharmonic in Los Angeles in mid-1944. That record, "Blues, Part 2," was released as Stinson 6024 and is still in print as a CD on the Verve label. Several notable jazz greats accompanied Jacquet on "Blues", including Paul Leslie and Slim Nadine (the monikers employed by Les Paul and Nat "King" Cole, respectively, in order to appear at the JATP concert incognito).

In 2004, Elvis Presley's "That's All Right Mama" and Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" both celebrated their 50th anniversaries. Rolling Stone felt that Presley's song was the first rock and roll recording.[111] At the time, Presley recorded Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle & Roll", later covered by Haley, was already at the top of the Billboard R&B charts.[112] The Guardian felt that while there were rock and roll records before Presley's, his recording was the moment when all the strands came together in "perfect embodiment".[113] Presley is quoted as saying: "A lot of people seem to think I started this business, but rock and roll was here a long time before I came along."[114]

Also formative in the sound of rock and roll were Little Richard and Chuck Berry.[115] From the early 1950s,[116] Little Richard combined gospel with New Orleans R&B, heavy backbeat,[117] pounding piano and wailing vocals.[118] Ray Charles referred to Little Richard as being the artist that started a new kind of music, which was a funky style of rock and roll that he was performing onstage for a few years before appearing on record in 1955 as "Tutti Frutti."[119][120][121] Chuck Berry, with "Maybellene" (recorded on May 21, 1955, and which reached # 1 on the R&B chart and no. 5 on the US pop chart), "Roll over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957) and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958), refined and developed the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive, focusing on teen life and introducing guitar intros and lead breaks that would be a major influence on subsequent rock music.[121] Early rock and roll used the twelve-bar blues chord progression and shared with boogie woogie the four beats (usually broken down into eight eighth-notes/quavers) to a bar. Rock and roll however has a greater emphasis on the backbeat than boogie woogie.[122] Bo Diddley's 1955 hit "Bo Diddley", with its B-side "I'm a Man", introduced a new beat and unique guitar style that inspired many artists without either side using the 12-bar pattern – they instead played variations on a single chord each.[123] His more insistent, driving rhythms, hard-edged electric guitar sound, African rhythms, and signature clave beat (a simple, five-accent rhythm), have remained cornerstones of rock and pop.[124][125][126]

Others point out that performers like Arthur Crudup and Fats Domino were recording blues songs as early as 1946 that are indistinguishable from later rock and roll, and that these blues songs were based on themes, chord changes, and rhythms dating back decades before that.[99][failed verification] Wynonie Harris' 1947 cover of Roy Brown's "Good Rocking Tonight" is also a claimant for the title of first rock and roll record, as the popularity of this record led to many answer songs, mostly by black artists, with the same rocking beat, during the late 1940s and early 1950s.[2] Big Joe Turner's 1939 recording "Roll 'Em Pete" is close to 1950s rock and roll.[127] Sister Rosetta Tharpe also was recording shouting, stomping music in the 1930s and 1940s, such as "Strange Things Happening Every Day" (1944), that in some ways contained major elements of mid-1950s rock and roll.[71] Pushing the date back even earlier, blues researcher Gayle Dean Wardlow has stated that "Crazy About My Baby" by Blind Roosevelt Graves and his brother, recorded in 1929, "could be considered the first rock 'n' roll recording".[52]

By contrast, musician and writer Billy Vera argued that because rock and roll was "an evolutionary process", it would be foolish to name any single record as the first.[128] Writer Nick Tosches similarly felt that, "It is impossible to discern the first modern rock record, just as it is impossible to discern where blue becomes indigo in the spectrum."[5] Music writer Rob Bowman remarked that the long-debated question is useless and cannot be answered because "criteria vary depending upon who is making the selection."[129]

Good stuff CoachSkip! I have no problem calling 'Rocket 88" a rock and roll record.

Here are some earlier examples of possibilities:

Note the guitar riff throughout

Original version 1946

(1944)

(1929)

So what do you all say? I'm going with Charlie Patton in 1929!

One of my favorite artists ever. Pretty popular in NOLA and California. He was raised a surfer/skateboarder in Cali and he played in punk bands. He moved to New Orleans in his twenties and pulled from musical influences there. Has a lot of soul. I don't really know how to refer to his music.. blues? swamp pop? Listen and see what you think. This guy puts on a great live show.

JJ Grey & MOFRO. Another one of my favorites. Can't really put a finger on their genre, but the music is great. Has a lot of soul. Another guy who is amazing live. He's one of those songwriters that can put you in a place with words. You listen to some of the stuff and it's like you're in North Florida where JJ is from. Check them out if you haven't heard of them.

I am reading a book about Buddy Holley.  That was Rock and Roll.  He died too young.  One thing about him he tithed to his church and so did members of his band.

I'm going totally against the grain here. I'm a classic rock - hard rock kinda guy. 80's hair metal are my favs.  Not a big fan of the current available music today.

Favorite current band:  Alter Bridge

Don't expect any of you to know them. Hell, I'll probably get smithed for this post, lol.

I really like Mark Tremonti and Alter Bridge and have all their albums. I felt he was so restrained with Creed and was able to really shine and flourish after their breakup. Always been a Tremonti fan but never a Creed fan. On a side note Myles Kennedy is not only a great vocalist but a fantastic guitar player. Unfortunately he plays with two of the best (Tremonti and Slash) so it's hard for him to stand out but he does play lead guitar on some AB songs like Blackbird from their album Blackbird.

On another side note this feller ain't too shabby if you're into Pink Floyd/Robin Trower styles of music... and he loves the HERD!

Great cover. Been a long time CTA and Kath fan. A lot of folks that have never seen that song played live probably don't realize how complex the song is and how intense and powerful Kath's playing was.

IMHO, Myles Kennedy is the best voice in rock. For all of you older gents on the board, you might recognize this song that is being covered "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkle. It is from the heavy-metal band "Disturbed" and they asked Myles to sing on this cover with them.

A couple examples of Myles' voice. This is him with his band  Alter Bridge

Breath Again

and my personal favorite "Metalingus" featuring Mark Tremonti.  (Hang in there atleast two minutes)

Huge Chicago fan. Their first album is one of the best debut's I've ever heard. Ranks right up there with Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix and the self titled debut from Boston. I actually like the first three Chicago albums. After that, they started becoming a hit machine. Took a little bit of flair from the group. After Kath died, I really feel they went down hill. Peter Cetera was trying to get them to go all pop before that. Once he got control, that was all she wrote. I still like listening to some of those albums, but they do not compare to those first three when the group really didn't give a crap about a bunch of hit singles.

I have tried to listen to some of the newer rock out there. I guess I am starting to mellow a little bit. Find myself listening to more acoustic guitar albums than anything else.

That wasn't Cetera calling the shots then. You can thank David Foster who's a brilliant song writer, producer, and Warner Brother's. Chicago had left Columbia records and their new label Warner Brother's actually did Chicago's A&R. Foster was all about pop ballads and a lot of 80 fans thought Chicago was a pop group. After making many hits Cetera's ego got even bigger and he left Chicago. Just to tell you how big Peter Cetera's ego is, he didn't even show up for Chicago being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Robert Lamm who is a great musician called Cetera many times to try and get him to change his mind it didn't happen.

Their success was definitely due to the sum of all involved but Lamm was a master songwriter. When he came in he had a notebook of 50 + complete songs with lyrics and music and they recorded many of them that went on to be hits. Not many people have that magic mix of being a solid songwriter, have command of their instrument  and can also sing lead vocals.

True, except for one. The album with the hits No Tell Lover and Alive Again was called Hot Streets. After that, they went back to numbers. I believe that album came out in 1978 or 1979.

As long as we are talking about 60’s music, two of my favorite local bands were Little Archie & the Parliaments and Lindsey Blair and the Dynamics, with I think Mike Thomas on vocals.

Riverside dances and the golf course on Rt.2 ?? Greenbrier(?)

And I think this subject is one fine sharing of info!!

Marcus King Band is a fantastic bluesy soul group of country boys from Greenville, South Carolina. They have influences from Chicago with a trumpet and sax player. In this live video their drummer Jack Ryan, whose a large dude playing a small kit, plays like a man possessed.

Another band I like us Tedeschi Trucks. Been a long time Derek Trucks fan since his teenage days with Allman Bros Band. His solo and right hand technique at the end of this song is mind blowing.

Another fav is Doyle Bramhall II. Many know his dad of same name who was co-writer for several Stevie Ray Vaughan songs. DBII is the main guitarist for Eric Clapton, did David Gilmour's parts in Roger Waters In The Flesh tour and was in the band Arc Angel. He plays a right handed guitar, left handed turned upside down like Hendrix did.

Joe Bonamassa is another favorite. Saw him live in August and he was amazing as usual. Have seen him live 4 times now.

EMan be sure to watch the Marcus King and Tedeschi Trucks. I'll think you'll like both bands. Also here's a clip of Doyle Bramhall II doing a "Pusherman" cover.

And another dude I love... Eric Gales. You got to stick with this vid...  he goes out of his mind towards the end. The guy is in anthother dimension. Everytime I watch him I about p1ss my pants.

I am loving this discussion. As a collector, I am always looking for new stuff and songs I had forgotten. How many remember the old 78's? I was able to get four from the early rock and roll era, including one from Ray Charles. I realize the sound quality is nowhere near digital downloads. But, I love playing these old records. Brings back memories of listening to 78's with my mom and dad.

I am reading a book about Buddy Holley.  That was Rock and Roll.  He died too young.  One thing about him he tithed to his church and so did members of his band.

The story goes that the Quarrymen got the idea for their famous name from Buddy Holly and the Crickets. They tried several insect names and decided on the Beetles and thought Beatles would be more appropriate.

Buddy was a huge influence on the Beatles and their first record was “That’ll Be The Day” in 1958!

This is very interesting.  I never fully comprehended Buffalo Bop's post until Big Hat's post made me go back and re-read it.  Makes a lot of sense now how they came up with the name The Beetles, then finally The Beatles.

Not many people I know listen to Robin Trower. First song I heard by him was Too Rolling Stoned. Was hooked from the point on.

My playlist is also eclectic. Right now, it is mainly Jazz like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and others. But, when I need it, Hendrix is there along with rockers, just to keep things honest. My wife tells everyone she never knows what to expect to hear when we travel. I keep it interesting.

I'm a huge Trower fan and have been since I was a young teen. He's actually gotten better with time and is currently working on a new album that will include another US tour. He not only writes all his material and sings but also is the artist behind his album covers. Although his vocals are not his strength they fit his style. Many misidentify him as a Hendrix clone because he uses a Deja Vibe and Wah but he really has a style all his own. He can still bring it fluidly and fluently and is one of my all time top 5 guitar influences for my own playing. If you haven't done so be sure to check out his last few albums. Bop will like who he says was his influence in this short interview.

I really liked Huey and the News , they always looked liked they were having a good time playing their music. I had read that article the other day , good read . For a musician to lose his/her hearing must be a little like an athlete not being able to play anymore , what are you going to do now ? The eighties did have some great music .

Thanks E. The kids had to cancel some shows due to the lead guitar player breaking his wrist roller skating, but the cast is off now and they are back to playing.  The comments about Huey Lewis losing his hearing is a good warning to musicians.  These kids from day 1 have worn high tech musicians ear plugs to protect themselves and are used to them now.

I really think hearing is much harder to lose as a person and musician more so than a career ending injury for an athlete. My dear mother lost most of hearing after her massive stroke. It was very hard for my mother and very emotional for me.

Look for a new country artist to launch his first album in February, Matthew Adam.  Formerly Matt Metheney.  From the Point Pleasant, WV area.

After a hell of a week for us all, It's time to turn our attention back to something we can all agree upon. The Isley Brother's is one of the baddest bands ever! They started out with a hit song called" Shout in 1959", before I was born, lol, The Isley's kept it coming and had a lot of hit's in the 70's, 80's, Check out a cat on guitar named (Ernie Isley). Jimmy Hendricks taught Ernie and the brother can flat out "burn down da house!", Ya Dig? lol...I'm trying to hip you cats to a little Ebonics, lol..I'm sure you guys will love "Summer Breeze", from another great duo and one of my favorites as well, Seals and Crofts! (Biggergreenarms, I'm sure you will appreciate Hendricks protege Ernie Isley)... Enjoy!..

Summer Breeze full version....

Who's that lady full version..

I just read Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News, contemplated committing suicide after suffering from hearing loss.. I love Huey Lewis and the News music. I'm praying Huey gets his hearing back, he's a very talented singer.

Hey E-Man...Huey Lewis and The News released some new music under the title "Weather".  He must have recorded them before his hearing worsened.

Fellas, I have to get off of this political thing and turn my attention to beautiful music.
Today I was listening to one of my favorite duo groups, Seals & Crofts. These cats made beautiful music that touched deep inside the soul. Hummingbird, Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl and many more hits from this wonderful trio. I love these tunes. They just don't make music like this today, It makes me appreciate it more.

Watch the Argent-1972 video. Their video clip of the music is very nostalgic, including images of a drive-in with a frosty mug of root beer and an old Texaco gas station. It brought back memories of growing up in the 60s.

Back in the day the music had very good messages and sounded really good. I hope we can get back to better music, minus the computer driven sound.. Hold Your Head Up, had a very positive message.

It's fun watching that girl take on that long drum solo! These "kids" play classic rock like they invented it. The amazing thing is English is their second language! I'm not technically proficient  enough to send links but she is on You Tube. Check them out. Gives you hope for the future.

This collab/project of Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) and Ritchie Kotzen is fantastic. Just released a few months ago and not many folks no about it. It's old school straight rock with a little 70s vibe. Both share lead vocal and lead guitar roles as well as writing. There mutual roles and contributions and how they deliver their lines and leads remind me of DBII and Charlie Sexton from Arc Angels one and only album. The entire album is fantastic from start to finish.

Another band I recently got into is Dead Daisies with their latest album Holy Ground. Been a long time fan of NC native guitarist Doug Aldrich. They recently brought in legendary singer/bassist Glenn Hughes  and took the band to the next level. Like my last post, this album is fantastic from start to finish. It's really rare that I find a complete album so good anymore, or for many decades. Every song kicks butt and then the last song "Far Away" is a refreshing change at a slower pace with symphonic and atmospheric elements. It's really a departure for Hughes as far as singing style and that's what makes it so good. Here's a sampling below of some of the songs.

The Ohio Players were a bad ass group.. I agree, I miss the super groups..I worry about there being any groups 10-15 years from now..

He left Fleetwood Mac and Mick Fleetwood found a guitar player and singer named Buckingham and Nicks to replace him, Nicks was brought along only because Buckingham, the guitarist he needed,  wouldn't join if his GF wasn't invited to join too!

I've have to do a good bit of driving out in the country with my job and I have a subscription to Sirius XM in my car, and I love it, I can listen to just about any kind of radio or music that I want anytime.  I'd go crazy listening to top 40 radio, I just can't relate to it anymore.

Right now channel 54 on Sirius is ABBA 24/7 for a limited time, because ABBA has an album out for the first time in about 40 years.  I've found that people either love ABBA or hate them, I grew up with them and I like them, and its nostalgia for me to hear this.  I think that they along with the Platters and some of the old doo-wop bands are the best vocal groups ever to record.   Anyhow they are playing tracks from this new album and from what I have heard it is really excellent, as good as anything that they put out in the 70s/early 80s, but I doubt that any of it gets any airplay.  Nonetheless it is a nice thing to hear music from musicians that made it because they had good songs and talent, it seems that is the exception rather than the rule anymore.

?Honey Don?t? was the B side of that record, which was also recorded later by The Beatles.

It?s funny to hear Red Foley introduce Carl and trying to describe his music back in those days.

I like seeing a lot of the old music posted. I have over 7000 records, either LP's, 45's or 78's. Add in about 1000 CD's and you can say I have a big interest in music. In fact, just got a new, professional grade, turntable. I am not quite 60, but for my money, it is hard to beat the artists that got rock and roll started. Not just Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and those folks. I am talking about electric blues artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. You want to hear what kickstarted people like Chuck Berry, take a listen to Spoonful or Smokestack Lightening by Howlin' Wolf. Listen to Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters. How about Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston. All came out before 1955. Some may not even know that Rock Around The Clock was actually released in 1954 and flopped. It was rereleased in 1955 following its appearance in a movie called The Blackboard Jungle. Between the movie and the rise of the music with a beat, it became a number one smash. I have a lot more useless music knowledge that I learned long before there was an internet and Wikipedia.

Little Willie John is best known for the original version of "Fever." Compare his Fever with "My Love Is."

Very cool!   I have somewhere around 3500 CD's and about 1000 albums and probably about that many cassettes.  Total music geek here!! LOL   Go back a few years further and Sister Rosetta Tharpe was laying down licks that Chuck Berry and others ate up and copied.  I love all that old music information, I too learned a lot of it prior to Google search! :P

I was listening to the 4th Led Zeppelin album today and, in my opinion, is the perfect rock album. Sure, there are songs that get played way too much. But, taken as a whole album, a rock album doesn't get much better than this one. When The Levee Breaks is my favorite song on this album.

I also like Jazz and have been really diving into A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. Again, in my opinion, a perfect album.

That second LZ album is also good. My favorite on that album is Ramble On. I also like Gallows Pole from the third album. Page, like Ricky Scaggs, can play just about any stringed instrument and he shows it on this song. Guitar, mandolin and banjo are featured on it.

I also saw something about the song Four Sticks on that 4th album. They didn't have a title for the song. John Bonham was playing the drums with four drum sticks so that is what they called the song.

Both brass sections of EW&F and Chicago are the best. Check out these videos. I love Chicago's horn section, genius Jimmy Pankow, Walt Parazaider, and Lee Loughnane. Robert Lamm is a very special talent. In these videos, EW&F and Chicago burn da house down.. 25 or 6 to 4 is blazing hott!

The Isley Brothers album that came out in September is solid. Ernie is one of the best living guitar players. Not sure if there are any good stories online about it, but pre-famous Jimi Hendrix lived with the Isleys for a bit, and it created some really entertaining stories.

Nathaniel Rateliff has some good stuff that he is working on. Same with Jon Batiste and Lukas Nelson (Willie's son) individually. Ernest (country) had a solid album about 9 months ago, and he is a good guy.

Caamp (similar to The Lumineers) had a quality album that came out in June.

For hip hop fans, LaRussell is a very unique artist both in rapping and his venues. Nas' string of four albums over the past 2.5 years is unbelievably impressive.

Here's a group for you Bop. I had never heard of them but for some reason several of their videos showed up in my YouTube home feed.

I was just watching the Collins Kids the other day on video. Lorri, the older sister, was the girl friend of Ricky Nelson at that time. The Collins Kids were a great act.

We were fortunate enough to see this band open for Eric Church in Charleston, SC. It took one song, and I knew they were gonna be good!

You know I didn't notice it when it happened but we didn't say anything about Tom T. Hall when he passed away.

I love songs that tell stories, and Tom T. Hall was one of the best at writing those.  Maybe his most famous song is "Harper Valley P.T.A." but I love a lot of the songs he put out himself.  He also did ads for Chevy Trucks back in the 70s.

So RIP Tom T., love what you did when you were doing it.

A sad ending to his life, but he left us with his entertaining songs. He's with Clayton Delaney now up in heaven.

We are in the car a lot, and our stations rotate between the 60 and 70s, classic vinyl and country; which really isn't anymore.  While in the service in the late sixties, I'd go drive around in may car in Mannheim, Germany at 4:30 every day I could to listen to the only half hour of country on the armed forces radio. Occasionally had the only other person in our billets that liked country join me.

Today, I'll go with the Doors, Stones, EW&F, Chicago, BS&T, Chris Stapleton, CCR, and the ever trustworthy Jimmy Buffett (rip).  I also like(d) Marshall Tucker Band.

Saw Little Richard in 1968 in a US High School gym with a couple hundred other GIs, all in fatigues.  He sang his song "Shake a Hand" on his last song, left the stage and came down and shook the hand of everyone of us, sunk the "shake a hand" the whole time.  I will never forget that, I didn't really appreciate his music per se, but it was a fantastic tribute from him to us soldiers.
