  • Marshall football has made a late addition to its coaching staff by reaching out to the Big 10 Conference.

Marshall University Athletics released a statement announcing Henry Baker?s hiring as the team?s cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Baker was the cornerbacks coach at Maryland for the previous four seasons before coming to Huntington.

    BAKER
    TITLE Cornerbacks Coach
    EMAIL hbaker2@umd.edu
Henry Baker is entering his fourth season as Maryland's cornerbacks coach in 2023. Baker was a four-year letter winner and two-year starter at defensive back from 1994-97 at Maryland, where he earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 2003.
In 2021, Baker oversaw a cornerback unit that saw Jakorian Bennett lead the Big Ten and stand second among all Power Five players in pass breakups with 1.3 per game. Bennett earned All-Big Ten accolades for his efforts under Baker in 2021.

In his first year at the helm of the Maryland secondary, Baker led one of the best pass defenses in the Big Ten, allowing only 200.0 yards per game, the third best mark in the conference and 25th best in the country. Baker's oversaw a unit that allowed 71 fewer yards per game than in 2019 and held four of five opponents under 215 yards passing.

Baker saw two members of the secondary, S Nick Cross and CB Tarheeb Still earn All-Big Ten accolades after the duo combined for 43 tackles (32 solo), 11 pass breakups and an interception. In his first year as a Terp, Still shined under Baker, being named a Freshman All-American by The Athletic after he led the country with two pass breakups per game.
Baker returned to Maryland after serving as assistant defensive backs coach for the New York Giants in 2019 after a brief second stint at Rutgers as the cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Baker spent the 2018 season at the University of North Carolina as cornerbacks coach and also held the same position during his first stint with the Scarlet Knights in 2017.

?Henry is a former Terp so I know he feels the same way I do about returning his alma mater to a high level,? said Locksley. ?He?s the son of a well-respected high school coach from South Jersey and his ties and connections in that area should be invaluable for us. Henry was a well-respected leader as a player and he will add value to our staff as a proven teacher, mentor, and recruiter. The Terps improved with this hire.?

Prior to joining Rutgers? staff, Baker spent six seasons (2011-16) as the cornerback coach at the University of Delaware, where he was also the special teams coordinator in 2012.  In 2016, the Blue Hens' defense ranked No. 19 nationally in fewest passing yards allowed per game (181.5), No. 21 in interceptions (15) and first overall as a team in fewest penalties per game (3.64).

The previous season, Delaware ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association and 22nd in the country in scoring defense (20.5 points-per-game) and was fifth in the conference in total defense (329.2 yards-per-game). During the 2014 season, Delaware ranked fourth in the CAA in passing defense, allowing just 197.2 yards a game.

Baker arrived at Delaware after serving as defensive backs coach at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) in 2010. The Warriors allowed only 194.0 passing yards a game.

Prior to his one-year stint at ESU, Baker served two seasons (2008-09) at Maryland, which included the 2009 Rowdy Humanitarian Bowl championship team that finished with an 8-5 record. He was the interim inside linebackers coach for the Terrapins' bowl game and worked with the secondary, linebackers and special teams during his time in College Park.

Baker previously served as Maryland's recruiting intern in 2001. He began his coaching career in 2003 at the school where he played high school football, Eastside High in Paterson, N.J. Baker's time at Eastside included an appearance in the New Jersey Group IV Section 1 state championship game. He coached at South Miami (Fla.) High School in 2007 before becoming a collegiate coach.

Baker also has pro football experience. He was with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2003, and competed in the Arena Football League with the New Jersey Red Dogs and Carolina Cobras, and the AFL2 with the Norfolk Nighthawks and Albany Firebirds.

Baker served in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship in the training camps of the Detroit Lions in 2015 and the Giants in 2016.

Baker and his wife, Theresa, have a son, Khari, and daughters Kaila and Khloe.

  • It was announced he was coming to Marshall back in February although the title of co-defensive coordinator seems to be new.

I thought so but someone said this is a different guy. But if so why is he just here now? Did he go through the spring with the guys?? Seems there are a few missing pieces

  • Certainly Maryland paid more for the same position. I'm guessing he's here to fill in seamlessly if the defense goes off the rails again with a pay bump for the title.

  • No big time B10, B12 or whatever coach is going to be recruited and retained at this level, UNLESS they have a fairly good idea that they are the "head coach in waiting". There is an unknown or unpublished reason why this particular one wants to come to MU....at least IMO.

I think you may be right.  The ice has been broken and now the case has been made G5 head coaches to jump to P5 schools as coordinators or assistant coaches.  If things don't go Huff's way this season I can easily see him (or his agent) trying to save face and salvage what's left of his coaching career by taking an assistant coaching or coordinator job at a P5 school similar to what Ga State's HC did at the start of spring practice.

I'm okay with giving a guy a shot at his first head coaching gig.  Huff just hasn't lived up to expectations, especially with regard to recruiting.  Huff recruits a lot of players, but like baseball most seem to be a swing and a miss.  Yeah, they may start, but they aren't any better or even as good as what we had at the position previously.

Huff is an average coach and recruiter

That's pathetic and he's gotta go

As far as talent goes, Huff seems to be terrible at evaluating QB talent.  I don't get bringing in QBs that are injured and never see the field of play.  Columbi could have been ok if he had an offensive line and few WRs.  He to had his "what is he doing" moments such as repeatedly running out of bounds with the ball behind the LOS when flushed out of the pocket rather than throwing the ball out of bounds near an eligible receiver.  I think Huff's offensive scheme is an issue too but that's another thread.  It's hard to make square pegs fit into round holes.

I tend to disagree though I think we need a new HC I think if CH is anywhere near .500 in todays climate he gets another yr at least.
