That's just it, you develop a guy and just when he starts showing promise, he leaves for a school offering more NIL. I've said it before, but if things don't change, I could see some G5 schools having a very difficult time hiring a quality head coaches. With NIL and the transfer portal, it is virtually impossible to build a program now. You are rebuilding your program from year to year. Coaches are constantly having to not only recruit new players into their program, but their own players to stay in the program. I can see G5 head coaches getting burned out and thinking that they can get an assistants job at a P5 school that pays more with much less stress. I could also see even P5 coaches getting fed up with the way the system is setup and trying to leave for the NFL assistant jobs.
I agree, building a program with high school players is nearly impossible in this day and age. It seems that a lot of players want instant gratification or being starters. Just look at the number of young players who transfer out at Marshal in their first year. In some cases Huff has explained to the players that they might be a contributor for a few years and the players don't want to invest the time to becoming better and they transfer to another school where they might play at once.
Look at Dan's program. He had his better players leave and he couldn't develop most of the others to becoming contributors. Dan was lost and didn't adopt to the changes. I will give Huff credit, he has adapted to the changes and is working the portal. The jury is out on whether Huff will succeed. Like others have posted, it is probably harder to be a head coach at Marshall's level. I wouldn't be a head college coach in this day and age.
