Title: I am so glad i went to practice tonight
Post by: herdorbust on November 17, 2017, 06:24:51 PM
Danny gave a tremendous speech after practice to his players. Not getting into details, but it was about basketball, life and how it all meshes. I'll be truthful, I was ready to run thru a brick wall after that speech. If that didn't hit the players in a positive way and get their attention on life and what they are doing right now, then nothing ever will. When I get a little down after something last night, Danny reaches down and does something like this. Again, we are so fortunate to have this man as our coach. Again, this man is building this thing the right way. And it is going to pay off before it is all said and done.

Honestly I wish every Herd fan had a chance to watch his practices and things like tonight. I know most can't because of where so many live. But if you did he would truly blow your mind the way he puts everything together. It's like some of us say at practice all the time....he never misses a thing that is going on. And he just always knows the right buttons to push at the right moment. Like I said. He got the job late and the first season was kind of a mulligan IMO. Then there is no doubt he needed to get up to speed on recruiting and they are really correcting that the last couple classes. With the young kids they have and the ones coming in next year and the ones that are on their radar for the next signing, they have got it going now. If he can do what he did with a walk-on (LOOP) a D11 transfer (STEVIE) an undersized inside player at 6'5"(TAYLOR) and cast, what do you think he can do with 6 to 7 players 6'7" and above with more talent? Just give him this year and next year and I think we will all be very happy.

It shouldn’t be building in year 4...it should be established..you are only dealing with a few players...not a good sign if you think we should be still building.

John is in year 8 and "building" this "young" team and some of you think he's the bees knees.

In DD's post-game interview he basically said he expected to win against the Illini, while being philosophical ( about the loss to Morehead ). I don't know how he expects to stay in the game against a bruising Big 10 style of play after being dominated on the boards by a smaller Morehead team.

I don't think anyone expects miracles until the beef arrives in 2018-19. But we can't be this soft on the boards and expect to win 17-20+. I'm not happy with our shot selection. Too many long distance 3PT attempts or waiting for Jon to create something ( hope his jumper returns quickly ). I know I am probably expecting too much too soon from Koljanin, Williams, West and a general meshing of the Team. If we can just take 90% of our threes within 22-23 feet ( closer to the line ) I think we would do better..

I thought the game officials ( probably do a lot of OVC games )  called  a very fair game. In the final 2-3 minutes a couple of calls that could have gone either way went with Morehead but one has to expect that - it wasn't too much to overcome at all by playing well.

I am impatient, I read these practice reports and I see us playing excellent perimeter defense. I know we have a bunch of guys with huge wingspans, why can't we block out and just fiercely grab the ball.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if we gave Illinois all they wanted, maybe win there. But I wouldn't be surprise if we got blown out by 15-20. Just like DD said, according to Herdmeister.

This is the first time the roster has turned over for DD. I think a lot of these younger guys are showing a lot of promise, and we still have Watson that we get after this semester is over with.

Williams and Koljanin showed flashes against Morehead. I think they are about to come on nicely.

Like your enthusiasm, herdorbust, and glad you are fired up!  Do you have any eligibility left?

The first 2 seasons should be a mulligan for DD.  Season 1 he got here kinda late, and with filling out the roster had to take the recruits he could get then.  The next season was still more of a learning recruiting process as he had trouble getting bigs that he liked.  DD's recruiting is much better now.  This season is down more due to Thompson (could have been considered a starter) unexpectedly leaving, and also having to replace last year's starters Browning, Taylor, and Loop.  Hate to say wait till next year, but next year we take a giant step forward.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m openly a Dan guy. He’s charismatic, free thinking and a good coach. Sometimes coaching isn’t always Xs and Os but life as well.

Let’s just look here. Penava came in and couldn’t hardly dribble and walk yet has improved tremendously. Milan was the same way, but can at least spell minutes. It’s not his fault he’s been cast into another role. Loop and Browning both grew a ton by the time they left. That’s the difference I think between everything else is i trust Danny with these kids to help them grow in a down year. Basketball is hard to predict with players coming and leaving. If everyone stays intact next year should be lights out.

Illinois is beatable. Need to compete and stay out of foul trouble. A few Marshall fans from Chicago are making the trip.

I think its great that Coach D allows fans to attend his practices. I also love the enthusiasm of some of the fans who go to these practices and give us reports ( Please keep doing that). With that being said I've learned over the years to never have high expectations for the next year until the next year comes around. In college basketball there are just too many factors in play and not even Coach D knows who will be on his roster next year. You could have kids going pro (Elmore), Kids transferring (Terrance Thompson), kids not being academically eligible (Burks and Watson), and heaven forbid injuries. Then there is the most important thing, team Chemistry.

Speaking of Thompson and Watson. Had these guys been on this team from Game 1 we could "possibly" be talking about a special season this year.

He doesn't only allow people to go to practice, he encourages it. He would be pleased if there were 2-3 thousand there everyday. He comes over and talks to us like you have known him your entire life. And then at the end he comes over and thanks us for coming. He not only wants to build a team, but also a chemistry between the fans and the team.

Herdorbust,
Could you remind us (meaning me) with what the BB practice schedule is?

Typically they get on the floor between 2:30 -3 during the week. Herdmeister usually get the exact schedule and he would have more on this. I'll tell you when you really want to go to practice. Is in a about 3 weeks when the second semester starts. Bennett and Cook will be practicing with the team then. Those 2 will make each other better and also make our young guns much tougher inside LOL.

We lost 4/5 starters with one of them (Thompson) coming very late in the process. Not sure how anyone can be upset about this being a down year. We didn't reach the big dance like we wanted, but we were still in the CUSA Championship game last year.

DD has proven that his teams improve throughout the season. Watson will definitely be a big help, and no doubt DD is going to be tweaking minutes/rotations over the next few games. Right now we are almost playing like the positions are all still open. Some guys will start to play themselves into more minutes over the next few games. I think Koljanin and Williams are the 2 guys who will do that.

I think Koljanin, Williams and Bledsoe will be getting more minutes. And George I think will get some also. Danny told every one of them, that if they weren't playing, it wasn't personal. It was because they weren't doing certain things he expected. He said it doesn't matter who it is, if you are the best, you will play. Because he said they are here to win and he would never keep a kid off the floor because of anything personal. When he is coaching, he coaches the walk-ons exactly like he does the others. If they make a mistake, he stops practice and coaches them up and takes as much time with them as he does the others. Just like what he did with Loop when he was a walk-on. He knew Loop could shoot it and he put him on the floor from day one.

Lol, when DD has a whole season and a half of total meltdowns and two whole seasons of O-fer against teams with a pulse, call us. Until then can you actually go "MIA"?

I'm not happy about the outcome, but we went cold shooting in the second half. We shot well in the first and led the biggest part of it. If shots fall in the 2nd like the 1st its a different game even with our turnovers.

First off what does Doc record have to do with this debate? I am Not in favor of him staying on as HC.
What I am asking is what metrics determines growth? I compared us to a Conf rival similar to us, So if we go 17-15 which is very possible, is that growth? I am Rooting for the guy and support the program financially. But I am sorry our recruiting of talent leaves a lot to be desired.

Our recruiting has been very good the last 2 classes.

Statement open for debate under any reasonable criteria.  Still waiting to see if Williams, Bledsoe will develop into quality, everyday starting players.  Thieneman had a red shirt year; still hasn't demonstrated that he can be anything but a few minute role player.  Williams was also redshirted, presumedly to help him mature, grow stronger, etc.  Most of you who have observed practices indicate that George would benefit from a redshirt year also. Yet, we still tend to resemble more the "98 pound weakling" than the mature, strong kind of front line players that will be necessary to compete at the very top of the league.  Next year we'll have a kid from Ohio listed as 6'7" weighing 170#, which means RAIL THIN!!  Guess his first year he'll require a redshirt, again to mature and "bulk up".  Finally, Dillon, from Mingo Central list as 6-4, or 6-5, and I was talking today to a man who refs HS football and he said Dillon is really about a solid 220# or so, and can really run.  So, he possibly can help out immediately either as a small forward or off guard, behind Elmore or Burks.  However, most people I've talked to from Williamson area swear that he is a better Football player than basketball player.

So, right now, from a physical toughness/muscle department on the front line, we are completely lacking anything close to what Kelly and Taylor gave us in the last two season.  Issue should improve greatly with our two "big" bigs coming in next season, and with Penava and some of the other front line players gaining another year of maturity, experience, S&C work, etc.

Didn't Danny say that if he was not getting the job done he will step aside and not have to be forced out?  Now, I also think he said something to the effect that it would be 5-6 years before his system would be fully implemented.  So, I'm willing to wait the five plus years to see if this program can at least get to the NIT.

I'm also willing to be more patient with basketball because

1. The Bball team hasn't been relevant since the 80s in the grand scheme of things.

2. DD inherited a bigger dumpster fire than Doc in my opinion, Herrion really set us back 4 or 5 season in my opinion.

3. We have a lot of local kids and our style has grown basketball excitement and attendance.

4. DD's kids don't get in trouble off the court and are great ambassadors for the school. Would rather win 54% of my games with those kind of players than 65% with ones that get in trouble especially if they mean no CUSA titles.

Do I want him gone?  No.  But I'm also not sure I'm buying all the Kool-aid that he, and his supporters, are selling.  I think there is a middle ground between completely supporting every single thing Danny does and says and saying to fire him.  I think it's fine to be critical of some of the decisions that have been made, some of the recruits (or the lack thereof) that we have seen, and some of the results.  I think he deserves another year or two for us to see if his plan can come to fruition, but I don't believe that just blindly following him and 'loving his speeches' while ignoring the on the court results is necessarily right either.  Facts are he has an overall losing record, and if you want to throw out his first year, he is slightly above .500.  And MIA brought out a great example of a conference mate and how quickly they were able to turn around that program.  I see no problem with questioning the direction of the basketball program, as the results, to date, has been a mixed bag for sure.  Seen some great things, and have seen some very troubling things.  Funny, but I could say the same thing about the football program....saw some great things with Cato here, but otherwise....  Just my opinion.

In addition to all of that, you can visually see the program progressing each year.

Nothing wrong with this.

I agree about the recruiting early on, but I think it's safe to say that DD has started to figure out recruiting. This years team is super young, especially in terms of actual college game experience. But look how much more athletic and how much longer these guys are. Notice how we haven't had any more Nokilic's or Mijovich's coming from across the water? Koljanin at least played some JUCO ball.

I also do not count DDs first year against him.

Nothing wrong with this post at all. But some just look at the moment and can't see ahead of them and the future at all. I think it is fair to say it took DD a couple years to get into the recruiting thing. And he has said from day one he doesn't want a quick fix with a bunch of Juco's. And how much was that LT coach making? What was his recruiting budget? Now looking at the future, let's look at some FACTS. And these are yes and no questions. Does DD players get better? The answer has to be yes, because every single player he gets gets much better. Does his teams get better during the year? Every year they have gotten better as the years goes by. Even his first year when he cleaned house and they lost something like 15 of 16 they really started playing well toward the end of the year. You have every single player back next year on paper except Milovic. And you add Watson Cook and Bennett. Look at Peneva as a freshman and then look at him last year as a sophomore. He started having some nice games. And now he is a double double machine and also blocking shots. How good will he be next year at the rate he is progressing? And Williams is in that same mold and will be much better next year as will George. Then you add the 2 big boys in there. And we still haven't seen Watson yet. I know we all want to see that straight line upward in progress. But this year is going to take some time getting the inside game going because they are so young. Yes there was some misses in that first couple recruiting classes. But I haven't seen any misses IMO in the last couple. You just had a freshman that scored 23 on the road at Illinois and gives you great D every second he is on the floor. We are not going to get the 5 star recruits Kentucky does. But the one thing that DD does is get the raw athletic "skilled" players Peneva-Williams-George types and make them into very good players for there size once they get the weight on them. I don't want to wait until next year or hear about next year either because I have been waiting since the Huck days for a great season. But the facts are next year IMO will be that year because of having the entire team back growing and adding the 2 horses inside. But bash away, but i'm willing to watch them grow thru the year and into next year.

Very good post! I believe that everyone wants Danny and DOC to succeed. CUSA is a very weak league in both football and basketball and I think it is reasonable to expect MU football and basketball programs to be at the top of the conference.

I, for one, want Dan to remain at Marshall. But, I also realize that we have some serious gaps that were not filled for this season. But, I like the direction the program is going. It has an awful lot of upswing to it. For those who want Dan gone, let me remind you of the years with Dwight Freeman, Ron Jirsa and Tom Herrion. You might also want to throw in Donnie Jones since he could never win in the conference tournament. And for those who want to talk about the year we went to the NIT under Herrion, just remember that team laid down because they didn't get the home game they thought they deserved in the NIT.

I  don’t believe anyone is calling for him to be fired. All I am pointing out is the accountability ALL of our coaches need to fall under. The same people who are calling for Docs head on a platter, (and in some cases rightfully so) seem to turn a blind eye, or the “we are building the right way” theory or mediocrity. Remember this line of thinking/acceptance got us in the bind we are in with football. I used the LA Tech example as a school with a smaller budget than ours who made a great hire and that hire turned it around in a 4 year period.
As for Danny I want him to succeed. But I am not going to be naive enough to be in a wait till next year mode every year. Expect results.

I think this is his 3rd year?  Coaches Should get 4-5 years to show results unless series explosion.  Man took the Herd to the title game last season.  He just needs to be sure he surrounds recruiters around him and player developers.

This is his 4th year.  Can rationalize it all you want.  Mike Hamrick played games in trying to replace Herrion.  Couldn't get a yea or nay from Mike D'Antoni on Herd job; perhaps he knew all along he could always offer the job to Danny if Mike finally wasn't able or willing to come to Huntington.  That's on Hamrick.  If he would have hired Danny soon after letting Herrion go it would have been better for everybody concerned, including Danny AND MU.

As for making it to the conference tourney "finals", should that really be the "standard"?  Hell, Greg White made it to the Southern Conference finals and was finally "let go".  And look at Greg's overall won-loss record.  He also coached his last several seasons in the MAC, which was every bit the equal, if not better, in overall basketball quality as the CUSA league we are currently in!!

While it is his fourth year coaching, it is only his third true recruiting class. And, Coalherd, you are right in Hamrick taking too long to get a replacement for Herrion. Remember how things were when Pruett left and Snyder was hired? I believe it was shortly before signing day if my memory is correct. If not, then I stand corrected. I also believe in accountability. I do believe things are getting better in the basketball program. I expect good things this year. Not great, mind you, just good. And I am not even going to look to next year because we still have this year to play out.

So ill take you as a yes. Got it!!!!

Well since he refered to Jon as "your" point guard, I'd assume he isn't even a Herd fan so who cares what he thinks.

Not only did danny not have time for re ruiting his first year. But he had to clean house as well. He was basically starting from scratch his second year. Canty, goard and thomas was sent packing and then boykins and manning was urged to transfer the next year. Honestly the first 2 years was just cleaning up and stabilizing the mess. He now has all his recruits and most are young or sitting out. I know where tbis is headed and im not worried. Jmo

No not true at all. Herdorbust and I just had a bit of a disagreement about DD a couple of days ago. But, Marshall is my school, I refer to it and Herd athletics as We, Us and Our.. If you refer to the school and sports teams as You, Yours, Them or Theirs then I just assume you aren't a Marshall person.
