By ANTHONY HANSHEWThe Herald-DispatchHUNTINGTON - Film work verifies what already was known.Containing Houston's dynamic, straight-line offense ends and begins with Anthony Alridge and Donnie Avery. Alridge, a two-time 1,000-yard all-purpose running back, and Avery, among Conference USA's top wide receivers, merely have combined for 3,391 total yards.Marshall University football coach Mark Snyder understandably has been impressed during early scout work. His improving defense faces another high-pressure challenge Saturday when the Thundering Herd (2-8, 2-4) visits Houston (6-4, 5-2). Kickoff at Robertson Stadium is 3:30 p.m. and WOWK will televise the game."Those two guys are very, very talented," Snyder summed up, not wasting words on the obvious. After averaging 10.1 yards a carry last season (a C-USA record), Alridge has followed with 1,308 rushing yards this season. He's "slumped" to a 6.3 yards a carry average, and ranks third on the team with 34 receptions for 369 yards and four touchdowns.Along with West Virginia's Steve Slaton-Patrick White tandem, Alridge presents the speediest challenge Marshall will face in 2007.
