    • ...he was one of a few icons of my generation, my older brother's, and the one before his.

    Leno's okay. Letterman's top-notch. But both bow down to the skill of Carson who was equally adept with his opening monologue, the skits and such, and conducting a good interview.

    As one reviewer said, "the music" may have "died" for some when Buddy Holly's plane fell in Iowa, but TV died for all of us when Bette Midler sang Johnny into retirement in 92... and today, it was buried.

    • In Johnny's memory, I'm going to take the 105 to the Slawson cutoff, get out of my car, cut off my Slawson, get back in my car, drive home and watch "The Edge of Wetness".

    You don't have to be Carnac the Magnificent to know he was a genius.....

    With or without THE MATINEE LADY....who could ever forget Carol Wayne

    As has been said and very well by David Letterman , the rest are only pretenders.

    What memories I have of The Tonight Show..and remember then it was an hour and a half , not like the short version Leno , Letterman and Conan do now..so as DA said heres to you Johnny and there went my Slawson..
