UNH football in need of a win at MarshallBy Mike Zhe

DURHAM — Playoff talk in Week 2? Believe it.

The University of New Hampshire football team set aside its one-game-at-a-time mantra briefly this week to acknowledge this hard reality: A loss — even to a Division I bowl subdivision program like Marshall — would leave it with a wafer-thin margin for error if it hopes to make a fourth straight trip to the NCAA playoffs.

"It's not good to be 0-2 trying to get to the places we want to go to," coach Sean McDonnell said. "There's a sense of urgency in this football program and it starts with me."

  • With Chilli Fest going on and American Idol concert starting at 7:00, it will be interesting to see what the attendance will be.  I would say 25,000 to 27,000.

  • I didn't realize that American Idol was going on, but really most of the people who attend something such as that wouldn't generally attend football games anyway, and Chili-Fest i would imagine would possibly bring people to the game that may typically not come since it will be wrapping up around game time anyway.

  • Yeah the chillifest ends at 4:30 so people can get to the game. The AI thing will be nothing but teeny bopper girls anyway with their moms.  I doubt they would be at this game anyway. Weather will be perfect tomorrow. No sense why there can't be close to 30k there. That is what I am hoping. If people don't show up they suck.

  • If they get a win against us we will be in a downward spiril, no doubt. I will be shocked if they even make it close by the end. If we don't win this game by 21 points there is no need to play.  A good team will beat a team like this by at least 3 TDs. Not saying they can't make it interesting but depth should be the key.

  • AI sucks compared to Herd football. You would have to be on crack to miss a game to go to that crap.

  • You would have to be on crack, or have an 11 year old daughter that you adore and since you are on the road three days a week you feel like you want to do something special for her.

Yes, I have to leave at half time to go see Sanjia.  Hopefully the game will be decided by then and the text message updates are received as promised.

  • It is quite, quite sad that some american idol concert could take precedence over HERD football......oooohhhhh i long for the days when everyone wanted to be "part" of a winner from 96-2003, now we have fans leaving at 1/2 time to see freaking "Sanjaya".  It seriously sickens me.  Then people want to talk about stadium "expansion".

For the record, American Idol is much more popular than college football. An average show has a Nielsen rating of 20+, which means that more than 20% of American Households are watching it.

Monetarily, the ads on AI, which can go for more than $600,000 for 30 seconds,  rival that of the Superbowl and about double any other show in the Nielsen top 20.

  • I read that the ticket manager has said that 25,000 tix have been sold. Of course we know that nearly 20,000 0f those are season tickets.

I would LOVE to see 30,000+ in the stands this afternoon.

I am afraid however, than many out of towners that were here last week, will not come back today. Probably won't see many of them again until homecoming game.
Today, I consider myself, the luckiest man on the face of the earth..

Yeah, and on average there are about 800 football games on television every week.  Not to mention that in just about any high school there is a big crowd every week.

American Idol is certainly hugely popular, but football is pretty much the most popular thing in America.

No doubt...but look at any college football game's ratings...then look at AI.

It would be interesting to look at a sum of ratings too...
