Where there’s smoke there apparently is not a Marshall-West Virginia football game in 2005.

West Virginia could have an opening if Central Florida opts out of its visit to Morgantown and Marshall and Virginia Tech have rescheduled their matchup in Blacksburg, Va. Those moves, however, are independent of their behind-the-scenes negotiations on a series and a meeting this season is unlikely.

"The timing could just be bad," Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum said of wedging in a game this year.
