  • Also, have we ever had a head coach in any mainstream sport who was poached for a P5 head job?  Cant think of 1 but it speaks to Caldwell's ability and potential.

I checked Vol Nation and don?t even see her listed?  Not doubting just seems odd.

I looked on Volquest and her name is mentioned as a leading candidate.

  • Maybe the rest of our HC will strive to do better knowing a great P5 is next job up.  Should be motivation.

Billy Donovan. Two seasons at Marshall, a couple of national championships at Florida and is regarded as great NBA coach.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • FWIW: Vols Report doesn't have Kim listed as a candidate.
    https://tennessee.rivals.com/news/betting-odds-set-on-who-will-be-the-lady-vols-next-head-coach

This site has listed as a candidate.
    https://volswire.usatoday.com/lists/tennessee-lady-vols-basketball-head-coach-search-hot-board/

If you believe these sites, it appears that UT is looking at coaches from higher profile programs. It would be a big jump from a program like Marshall to UT. We saw how we rank against top women's programs when we played VA Tech. I would think UT would be looking for a coach who has competed at a higher level, but you never know.

I would rather have her poached by a bigger program than be stuck with a coach who can't win (Dan). That means we are hiring good coaches.

  • I'm a UT grad and longtime Lady Vols fan, so I've been following the search for the new coach.

I'm very skeptical that the new hire will be Caldwell; I think the fans would be disappointed -- they seem to have high hopes of poaching a top Power 5 coach with a long history of wins in the NCAA tournament and top-level recruiting.  The coach who was just fired had a successful record at Marshall-level schools (Western Carolina and Missouri State) in the tournament.  Since she was seen as a failure, I think the hire will be from a proven top shelf program.  The knock on Kellie Harper was that she couldn't recruit, since Kim has no track record of proven elite recruiting, I don't think she will make the cut.

  • if i were a UT fan, i'd be pretty disappointed if we took a DI rookie coach who won a weak conference & then got plastered in the 1st round by a team that got bounced 2 days later.

i'm not dogging KC, i think she's going to be great for us.  but put your shoes on the other feet...UT is an elite nat'l program.  they could have just about any power conference HC they want...& they're gonna settle for a rookie SBC coach?

I've been following the Lady Vols site on Volnation and there is almost no mention of Caldwell as a candidate in the hundreds of messages there -- mainly banter about hiring coaches from elite programs like Louisville, USC, Notre Dame, etc.

There is a thread stating "I think it's the Marshall coach".

  • I wouldn't put too much on a message board that doesn't charge a subscription. Most larger schools have boards that charge a fee just to keep the kids and their Walmart fans off the boards. Even wvu has a board that charges a fee and that is where the "connected" supporters post information.

But I seem to remember a lot posts saying she was going to UK just a few weeks ago? I am not sure if Kim was a candidate for the UK job? But if she was and UK passed on hiring her; I would be very surprised to see a  higher level program like UT hire her. Donnan did make a big jump from MU to UGA so anything is possible.

  • I'm hoping it's not true. She has brought a lot of energy to the program and can build something really special here in Huntington. That being said, Tennessee has a great program and that would be hard to turn down for a lot of reasons. If she does go. Jenna Burdette needs to be promoted to the Head Coach immediately. She was very instrumental in getting this program turned around and is seemingly ready to take on a head coaching gig.

  • Kim's name will come up with about any job as long as she keeps winning here.

However, I can't see Tennessee taking her at this point. They can almost have their pick off coaches. Our fear has to come from the schools that lose coaches to go places like Tennessee.

It will not surprise me if she is coaching at one of the big schools one day, but I hope she's at Marshall for a long time.
