Hard to keep an All American at MU with NIL deals abounding.  Oh well, we are who we are; just hard to figure that out right now.  Since today is the last day of declaring for the Portal until after spring practice, he must have waited until the very last minute, of got a last minute deal.

Not just the NIL, but open and multiple transfer rules with no oversight from a governing body.

Outside of the big schools, this kills schools like Marshall when they're good to decent players leave after a year of play.

Don't know how non P5 coaches can even build a team not just year to year, but semester to semester now.

The Portal Tracker has been updated again to include the three confirmed players announced the last day or so. However, you can pretty much bet I?ll have another update later tonight or tomorrow. And aren't they still students, who have to register and take classes? Do they have to pay back athletic scholarships when they leave after the add-drop period ends?

If you are a grad transfer those dates do not matter, you can go into the portal at any time.

Graduate transfers can enter at any time. However. . .

I obviously do not know for certain on every single player that enters the portal, but we have known of several that have made social media declarations of entering the portal because they intended to do so, and were not officially able to at that time because the portal was not open. So there is the possibility of a player having already entered during the window that had just never put it on social media, and the possibility of a player prematurely announcing it before the window opens next. I imagine that some want to go ahead and get their name out there and that they will be available.

The talent, on paper, coming in is pretty impressive. Of course lots of guys going out as well.

Not sure what to think of it all. On one hand it appears that the "big boys" of college football miss on recruits an awful lot or maybe they just over recruit so much that once down on depth chart it is hard to move into playing time...whereas G5 type schools fill a lot of bottom of roster with projects, longshots, or guys that are marginal D1 talent. On other hand maybe it is more coach or environment situation. I certainly don't know but it seems like there are many players who are willing to put their lives completely in flux for a potentially better opportunity or situation.

It sort of saddens me as my friendships at Marshall are very important to me to this day. I had a great friend transfer out before my senior year and it hit me really hard. It would be interesting to run into some of these guys 10 or so years from now and see how the story goes.  I just hope to God that most get their degrees at one point or another and don't regret the relationships that were lost thinking the grass was greener while still appreciating the chances to get into a better position. In a way I guess you have a chance to rebuild your reputation on and off field in a fresh start.

I wish Martin well, he stayed when it was clear his playing time was going to be limited, and really only got noticeable playing time after the demise of the secondary this year.  Hate to see local gents leave, but he has a degree from MU and will forever be a son of Marshall.  IMHO, I would not expect him to get a bump forward, as others have said, he's a step slow for G5 standouts, and barely effective at safety as a sub.  Not sure what or how it is played today, but a (back to the 70s) roaming linebacker might have been a better spot for him, and might be somewhere now.

Blake Ford, backup kicker at Arkansas.  Apparently had crazy distance - there's a video of him hitting a 73 yard FG in practice on the internets.  He announced on Jan. 2 so it probably got lost in the holiday shuffle.
